Millennials are more than a careless generation who find no value in life lessons from the past. For the last two semesters, I have had the pleasure to write about the ideas, talents and motivations millennials seem to struggle with. I truly believe there are many lost arts (forgotten skills that were practiced and mastered by older generations) among millennials and if these lost arts are not practiced, they will fade and become forever lost. Though we may have a lot to learn, we are a fantastic generation who has potential. From life experiences, I can say my life has been changed by learning to listen to two white-haire- d women, being married, showing chivalry, and talkIf time is ing taken to implement these lessons or skills, you'll be set for life, and this is speaking from experience. I think it's time to call it quits on the bashing of a generation of which I am a part of. We, by no face-to-fac- Let us know using VoiceofDixie. Some may simply want answers that are reasonable and explainable. I also believe being inquisitive enables a millennial to be independent t. and They learn when they want something, they have to being willing to struggle and persevere for it. Achieving these aspirations require some sacrifice for many millennials; it may keep them from missing out on the activities of "millennialhood" V UNCONVENTIONAL r-- CD COURAGEOUS r...' This can be a big, rough and mean world we live in, and if one can't fend for his or herself, then he or she doesn't stand a chance. Millennials are fighting just as hard, if not harder, to find their place in a world that thinks pretty poorly of them. Look at the major push for equality, which members of the LBGTQ community have made. They stick their necks in the guillotine controlled by society in the name of love. As a kid, 1 on the out put myself (the time period of being a young adult) in order to find success for a brighter" tomorrow. I've found myself in this predicament numerous times during my college days. For most of my higher education, I have typically held one, two or three jobs on top of being e a student. I had to rely on myself to get money for food, phone, car, car insurance and dates. I knew if I wanted these things I had to be independent and do what needed to be done. Since you cannot control how the waves will act, you must learn how to work with them in order to surf. You need to be able to identify when the wave will swell and when it will crash. At first, you might not see a wave's potential until it is too late. The water might swallow you up and spit you out, or you have to dive underneath it, letting it pass over you. You need to know the flow of it. Once you know the flow, you can just go with it. Each wave is an opportunity. With practice, you will know which waves to ride, how to ride them, and which waves to pass up. These waves can be intimidating, but putting trust in yourself can help you ride waves you never thought you could. The flow of life unfolds right in front of us. New moments full of potential are always on the horizon, and it is up to us to grasp them and let them take us to where we want to go. At this point in our young-adu- lt lives, we have started to develop skill sets that can take us places. We can apply for internships or graduate school, acquire g jobs or start our own businesses. Even though we may have the potential to seize opportunities such as these, we cannot force them to happen. There will be times when we will fail or crash, and those situations are op portunities we can learn from. Whether you are in the ocean or on the beach, the waves will always come. The opportunities to get where you want to go will be there. You have to decide to get out there and take them. Some opportunities will seem intimidating, but we must believe we can succeed. Look for the potential waves on the horizon. Learn what to look for and how to ride them. Put yourself out there, and hunt for opportunities and take them. Send emails or go out in person to the companies or places you want to work. Study how others did it and see what worked for them. Be open to alternative ways to get to your destination and be brave. With every Opportunity seized, the amount of experience increases. When things don't work out, always see a failure as a learning opportunity, and get back on the board and try again. There's a church on nearly every comer and the St. George temple is visible from all places in this small, bowl-lik- e ' , city. Utah for less than a week before I was harassed for my lack of religion, and it traumatized me. It astonished me, the religion that I thought preached love, had members so hateful and bitter. This was one of my first interactions with members of the dominant religion in Utah. I had been looking into the religion and had so many questions, but after this experience I turned the other way. I wanted nothing to do with the religion, and when missionaries knocked on my door I agreed to meet with the intent to prove them wrong. I came to our meeting with facts and questions I knew they I was in couldn't answer. After every meeting, tiv missionaries would ask me to read and pray, and I promised to do only the first. I was stubborn in in) cause because I didn't wg the beliefs of the people who had caused me so much pain to be true.
