Heres some helpM hints May is National Arthritis Month and the Arthritis Foundation is focusing attention on the positive things people with arthritis can do to help themselves and others. According to the Foundation, successfully managing a chronic health problem like arthritis depends as much on the person with arthritis as on the doctor. Each person with arthritis has certain responsibilities. Knowing these, then carrying them out, can keep the person productive and active, while minimizing the amount of pain and stiffness. The Arthritis Foundation offers these tips to people with arthritis so they can take more responsibility for their own health care: as much as possible about your condition and its treatment. -- Follow the treatment program your doctor prescribes for you. -- Take your full, prescribed dosage of medication even when your condition improves. -- Use good posture when sitting or standing, and avoid putting excessive pressure or stress on your joints. -- Avoid by conserving your energy. Pace yourself, and plan your day to balance work and over-fatigu- e rest. -- Talk over your feelings and problems with family and friends. -- Exercise daily within your physical limitations. Your doctor or therapist can help you develop a plan that is safe and effective. People are eager to learn how to better cope with their arthritis and we are eager to show them, said Lisa Fall of the Arthritis Foundations Utah Chapter. The nothing can be done attitude is being replaced by optimism and determination. In the past few years, the Found- - ation has worked to teach people with arthritis how to become better partners in their own health care. Our programs are designed to be supportive and encouraging, said Ms. Fall. By participating with others who have arthritis, those who take our courses learn that they are not alone and they can leave the course with better control of their bodies. Ms. Fall notes that the Arthritis Foundation is able to offer patient programs like these because of the many volunteers working locally. People who contribute their time and talent to us are not just helpful, they are essential. It is their energy that extends our services into the community and into the lives of people with arthritis who desperately need our help. Health care professionals, such as rheumatologists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and people with arthritis and their family members, make up an important part of this group, said Ms. Fall. In fact, one of their most important roles is serving as the volunteer leaders who direct our patient programs. There are a lot of things our chapter would like to do that we just dont have the staff to accomplish, said Ms. Fall. Arthritis affects nearly 37 million one in seven people. Weve got our work cut out for us. During Arthritis Month, the Arthritis Foundation expects to generate more awareness and enthusiasm for its programs and recruit additional volunteers to help make its plans happen. Consumer Information Writer Utah State University If you have only a few bugs running around your house you can just do a tap dance on their little heads. If you have a few more, you may need a can of spray or a few roach motels. However, if you have termites eating your house or cockroaches that are starting to move furniture, you may need professional help. You open the yellow pages to Pest Control or Exterminating or get references from some of your friends; now what? How do you choose the best service? Howard Deer, Utah State University Extension pesticide specialist, offers a few tips on choosing a competent pest control ser- their service. When youre working with potentially toxic chemicals, neatness does count. There shouldnt be any accessible puddling or visible residue of the chemical remaining after the application. 4. What kind of questions does the applicator ask?: A competent applicator should ask you some questions. The applicator should want to know if you have children or pets. Pet birds can be especially sensitive to pest control chemicals sprayed indoors. If you have tropical fish, you may need to remove the aerator for several hours to keep the chemicals from being drawn into the water. The applicator could also ask if you have any special flooring or carpeting that might be stained by the chemicals.
