The teachers have agreed to take a small cut in pay. This scholarship provides financial assistance from $1,000 to $3,000 per year, based on need, for up to four years. Melanie, a senior at Layton High School, was chosen as one of 12 winners from competition with over 250 other students across the nation. L5 Health Occupation students from the CLEARFIELD Clearfield Job Corps Center did an outstanding job at the annual competition sponsored by the Health Occupations Students Association (HOSA) of the state. It was their first appearance at the competition, which is held internationally each year. Over 350 health occupation students for high school and vocational schools participated in the event at Weber State College. Ten categories of demonstrations and written and oral tests were conducted. Among the Clearfield students, Kirk Duval, 19, of Sandy, was first place winner in the Nursing Assistant category. Kirk has been at Clearfield Job Corps. Center since last June. On Wednesday evening, each of 12 schools, including Burton, sang for five minutes. This followed a similar program Tuesday night. After the choirs repertoir, the dozen groups combined for a grande finale to close the evening. Burton teacher, Diane Smith, directed the youths who had the distinction of being the only school from Davis County participating.
