Con- Congress will reconvene next Thursday at noon, but It is not expected that much business will be transacted In either house until the week following.' Yours for a prosperous new year, Cal. 1::l8. -- And He Is the Head cf the Body: the Church.. That in All Things He Might WEEK TONIGHT! Hant a a tor either body, and the general expectation la that nothing will be done in that direction until the bouses are called together. There has seldom been such an exodus of public men for a brief respite from work as there was when the recess began, and aa the members are returning very slowly there la not a sufficient number of either senators or representatives in the city even to outline a plaa of action. The purpose in a general way la to proceed with the appropriation bills aa rapidly as possible, but as neither bouse has one of the measure! before It, both will be forced to take up matters of legislation or adjourn from day to day until the committee can bring in some of the supply measures. It may therefore happen that one or both houses may adjourn from Thursday or Friday until the following Monday. It la known to be Senator Foraker's wi.h to secure early consideration by the senate of his resolution of n senatorial Investigation of the Brownsville (Teas) episode, and he has been devoting much time during the recess In the preparation of hia discussion on that subject. Senator Smoot'a Casa. Tbs question of Senator Smoot's eligibility Is nlso In condition to be considered by the senate, but as Senator Fo raker la counted upon by the Utah eenator'a friends to lead in the defense. It la understood that the question will be deferred for n time. If not Indefinitely. There Is a growing disposition among senators to postpone action on the Smoot matter, end predictions that the session will be permitted to pass without a vote are not infrequent. Mr. Smoot, however. Is very aolldtoua tor a ballot, and bis wishes may be permitted to prevail. Senator Gearing of Oregon has a speech forthcoming on the Japanese question, but he will not be heard until the second week of the session. By unanimous consent the senate will vote on January 12 on Senator U Fob lette'a bill placing a limitation on the duration of the employment of railway operatives, "and that measure ! now in position to be called up for discussion at any time. The senate will give part of the session Thursday to the consideration of Senator McCumber's general pension bill. In the absence of the speaker and other members of the committee on rules, no prediction regarding proceedings in the house before the appropriation bills are reached would be Justified. It may be confidently stated, however, that no important matter will be taken up In the interim. Fortifications Sill. The next appropriation bill to be reported to the house will be the fortifications bill, and thla will be follow ed by the bill making appropriations for the District of Columbia, but neither will be ready for consideration before the 16th of January. The senate committee will report the legislative. executive and Judicial bill about a week after the reconvening of congress. and It will soon be followed by tbe Indian bill. If there should be no effort on special legislation on that measure. The legislative bill will receive the attention of tbe senate as soon as reported. Among the changes In state administrations to take effect tbie week, much Interest attaches to that In New York, where Charles E. Hughes becomes governor. The important hearing by the Interstate commerce commission Into the affairs of the Union Pacific railway company will be opened In New York on Fridar. E. H. Harriman will be one of the first witnesses called. It la expected that the Investigation by the commission will prove to be very Important and interesting. Algaclraa Protocol. The Algedraa protocol providing for Moroccan reforms, having been ratified by the nations concerned, the treaty will be signed by representatives of tbe different powers. December 31. at Madrid. It la expected that the regulations governing the international police force In Morocco will shortly be drawn up. In the Presbyterian church were of exceptions! Interest yesterday. The singing of Mrs. Ashworth, Mrs. fk evens and Mlaa. Lynn was worthy of eapedal mention. Mrs. Ashworth Is an accomplished musician, having completed both the Instrumental and voice mum at Denver university and atudled with Prof. Galloway of New York City. Mrs. Stevens has king' been a favorite among Ogden singers. Miss Lvnn la Instructress In music In New Jersey academy at Logan and Is attending the teachers convention. These, with Mr. Crockett and Mr. Fell, gave to Ogden a musical New Tear service long to be remembered by those who attended. After the praise service Rev. Mr. Carver spoke upon the "Message of 106 to 1907 In Thoughtful Minds." Mr. Carver said in part: A collection of diaries, aa they are displayed In a shop window, W ever to me food for deep contemplation. What records of days will they record T What deeds nobly nr weakly wrought? What help or temptation given? What progress in si nor goodness recorded? We are standing at the threshold of another year and much as we may depreciate resolves which bear no fruit In life, we muet nevertheless be in more or leae of a thoughtful mood when we think of the great bundle of clean, pure days which It offers us as a possibility. New Years day la a time for reflection. 8ome people do not like to do thle. but It holds to life and character the same place that a stocktaking does to commercial enterprises, and It is wseentlal of one means to progress. Chalmara aald ha owed hia all to regular weekly stocktaking of hia spiritual growth or decline. Each Satthe urday afternoon he reviewed week's work In hia Inner life. Of course, If one does not care whether he grows In character and has no value or time for spiritual things, then this la gll useless talk, hut If he values hia life in toy sense aa highly aa his merchandise, then ha will reflect upon, hia gain or loss in things spiritual. Hearer, how has your Ufa progressed this year? Do you value sacred thing as much as you did one year ago? How has the year gone with your soul? The past year has, I trust, made more real to you many of the realities of the soul. The real life possession have to grow both dear and real to us by actual experience. Faith deepens with trusting, and the realities which faith makes clear become nearer and morn beloved the more we exercise our faith. The same is true of our affections la their relation to ward men and God alike. Each year tells us more' of the surety of the foundations upon which we build our life's worth. We can each year know whether the promises which self and sin, or those of God and faith, be true by testing the realities which they have yielded. Simple things teach the grandest of lessons. Most of the great strides la our race's progress have been made as some simple message has unfolded its meaning. Tbe atory of the Prodigal Boa Is a simple story of a simple scene of everyday wayward life, and yet there la so much of the truth which He nearest our soul in It and so much of possibility of everyday good or evil In It that It grips our attention and feeds our thought. Deep In our hearts we feel that we. ton, are the Heavenly Father's children, and that somewhere between that far country" and the Inner shrine of the heavenly home we, too, are atraylng. We realise that the Father's love is our choicest possession and that too, have often forgotten It. The whole story comes home to us. Each year gives to us a larger definition of life's responsibility. Tbe daya have given unto ns. more of wisdom, opportunity and vision and aa these are unfolded the sense and other realty of our responsibility to for all that which has been entrusted to ua becomes more dear. Sensuality and material things may dull ha message for a time, but It will speak with renewed vigor again. Because of soother year's life and opportunity yon tnd I are responsible to those about ua: to God and to ourselves for a larger sad better life and a nobler effort All this means a direct question to each of ua. Is it not time that we aflse in nil our strength and live for the best we can for onrselves.Indeed others and for God? I It not the most manly end womanly thing that we cn do to resolve anew to serve our God with new seal and purpose and strength? There la no life which yields an mnch of Joy and peace and so little of ennnl and dleapoint-meor care In thla world as does the Christian lire. Anl true, R aioae baa promise in the life to come. Let ns resolve then to live It with new aesl In the year to come. w-- nt whole-hearte- d oil 11 1; lAi-iii- .u.m i aii j.,p iis i i i . It . n n,if - The closing hours uf ibr yer will doubtless engage ns in meditation and resolution toward God and man. Re will be ronsciuus of many broken promises and thilaies and we will face the New Year with a determined purpose to make it nriro profitable than any which have gone before. Aud 1 presume that most of you. my friends, in your silent promises, will declare your intentions of giving more diligent heed to your obUgstkms toward God and service in hit cause, which means so much to all, both now and in eternity. Aud this supposition permits me to bring to your mind the theme of the morning, namely, The of Christ." The church is the greatest Institution in the wurid. There are many others entitled to our best consideration, auch as free government In which every man may be master of the situation; those of the home, eb uention, an, trade and philanthropy; but the very fact that Jesus Christ waa divinely appointed to Institute and to forever lead the church in Its n mlssin among men makes It the greatest of all organisations In the world. That tha church waa divinely Instituted there can b no doubt. Tho human heart and Intellect possesses inherent principles of worship. Archaeology discovers fo us prehistoric altars of sacrlflcy to, perhaps, an unknown God or gods. History Itself tells ua of the Abrahamlc covenant, tabernacle la the wUdenwts, the various places appointed for wonblp by tiie ancients; the temple at Jerusalem in which appeared the great priest of all, Jetua Christ, whom we preach this day. Wa find recorded In his biography the Instance In which he declared to the world that upon the faith of his divinity, as exhibited by Peter, he would build hia church and that tbe gates of hell should not Tha sama bock prevail against it aa wall aa theme ef profans history tell ua that the Apostle Paul Immediately succeeding in the ministry of Christ went shout establishing aud organising churches in the name of the founder: and we have the records that this great institution has withstood attack from within and without and cornea down the ages with victory and ultimate conquest written on her banners unfurled. The mission of- - the church Is to overthrow sin In nil its phases, to unite nil peoples la a common t'ealre to serve God and acknowledge Christ as God's son and the sinners' friend; thus glorifying the creator and honor Ing the spirit 'a work In this world. It Is accomplishing its work by putting ell individuals cft.an equal plane. However much men may differ with this statement t la nevertheless true that the gospel way of salvation makea all persons equal In the sight of God and the world. To llluetrate thle we need only to turn to the blbTe Itself. Take the case of Cain and Abel as w find It in the fourth rhap-te- r The reason that cf Genesis. Abel's offering was acceptable over that of Cain was not because of quality, grade or quantity, but rather because Cain neglected or reIn a spiritual fused to recognize. sense, the beneficence and mercy of God. God baa surely given Christ the by making him the head of tha church which la the visible portion of the kingdom among men. Christ Is recognized in history, government. commerce and society and although he is not as be should be In theses. It la nevertheless true that, he baa today the pretaking eminence.
