Starting May 22 and continuing through Memorial Day, the National Safety Council is hotline for setnng up a the public to identify vehicles with unbuckled children. The phone line will be in operation, May 22-2during the next Operation ABC Mobilization, the national law enforcement crackdown on deadbeat drivers adults who disregard the law and fail to buckle un kids. Our Citizen Action Response Hotline will offer a way for citizens to get involved in protecr-inchildren from one of the leading risks they face - nding unrestrained in a vehicle, said Jerry Scannell, President of the National Safety Council. He pointed out that its the law in every state that children nde buckled up. During the Mobilization, officers in all 50 states will intensify enforcement of child passenger safety laws through checkpoints saturation patrols, and increased patrols. Citizens can help by diand idenaling tifying vehicles transporting an unbuckled child in violation of the -- toll-fre- e -- g law. The National Safety Council will send a letter to vehicles owners reminding them that permitting a child to ride unbuckled is dangerous. The letter also states that because its the law that children be buckled, if they are stopped by the police, they could be ticketed and fined. Once letters are sent, no records are kept and there is no further follow-up- . The hotline is patterned after similar existing programs in more than a dozen states and localities. In addition, there are numerous other state and local programs that enable citizens to report drunk, aggressive and unsafe drivers.
