TOWN COUNCIL ELECTION —Tues, Nov 7 Three Town Council seats will be voted on. 2 yr seat: Jayne Dillon- Smythe is running unopposed for the remaining 2 yrs of Donovan Robert’s term 4 yr seats (2): Theresa Carey, Pat Drake, and Dave Wagstaff (writein candidate) are running for the two regular 4 yr seats. (Mayor Valli Smouse and Lois Oliver remain on the Town Council for another 2 yrs.) A free Kids Costume Carnival runs from 6:30 to 9:30 each night. ATLAS TAILINGS The carnival offers fun activities \'\\ Q PILE MEETING Over 14,000 truck loads of rock may be quarried from Round Mountain in Castle Valley, if the Atlas Uranium Mill tailings pond is “capped” in place. A new EIS for the Atlas Tailings Pile is expected to be released around the beginning of next year. Letter writing will be needed at that time. Now is the time to learn more about the issues. A meeting is scheduled for Jolene Williams, Lot #236, Miller Ln. 7:30pm, Nov 16th, in Star Hall (Lower Miller Ln, 2nd to last home on the left) Voting Location: Lois Oliver’s home, Lot #202 Shafer Ln, (half way down Shafer Ln on the right, look for Am. flag) Hours: 7am~8pm. (The LDS Church is not available due to construction.) Castle Valley Fire Protection District: Board Position. The treasurer’s seat is open on the CVFD Board. Paul Sizemore is the only candidate at this time. $10,000 to Town The Town has received its first State Sales Tax disbursement of $847. This is our share of the State Sales Tax fund for Jul This will give our community about £10,000 extra funding each year. Along with the Class “C” road funds, this means we are getting about $22,000 a year by being a Town! For more info on our sales tax see articlein this issue of CVT. The festival includes an outdoor spook alley for adults at '\ (Moab) to present information and discuss what citizens can do to help prevent Atlas capping the tailings pile in place (which would require rock from Round Mountain). This meeting is sponsored by the Grand County Council, the League of Women Voters, and the Association for the Tree of Life. The latter is a local non—profit organization that has done much of the work to date, regarding Atlas Mineral’s proposal to cap the tailings pile in place. Please mark this meeting date on your calendar and plan to attend. Watch for more info at the front gate. (For more information about the Round Mountain/Atlas Tailings Pile situation, see article in this issue.) and booths for children, and families or individuals can compete for prizes in a pumpkincarving contest. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Goofiest, Weirdest, Scariest, Most Creative, Best Overall. Free pumpkins for carving are available after Oct 20th at CFI offices on So. Hwy 191. Tickets for the haunted forest at Rotary Park are $3, and will be sold at the gate. Ghoul-guided tours through the forest are scheduled to begin at 7pm. Local merchants have donated prizes for a competition this year for the best performance or scene in the park. Some of the best vignettes from the 1994 haunted forest will be reproduced this year, including the crazy clowns-in—the-box, the body parts cafe, and the electrocution execution. There will also be scenes unseen before, and scenes behind the scenes, featuring free-floating phantoms. Proceeds from ticket sales will help underwrite a newly developing environmental education program for students in the 7th and 8th grades. The festival is Fri & Sat nights, Oct 27th and 28th.
