Show ExSecretary of War Belknap Death WASHINGTON D C Oct 13 General W W Bolknap secretary of war during President Grants first term was found dead in his bed at 9 oclock this morning It is believed his death occurred between 1 oclock Saturday night and 9 oclock Sunday Sun-day morning From John W Cameron General Belknaps business associate it is learned that for some time it has been the generals habit to meet a few friends at the home of Dr Hill who lives less than a square away for a social game of cards Saturday night he with them as usual remained re-mained until nearly midnight when he returned re-turned to his apartments in the Pinevans building at 1420 Now York avnue and presumably pre-sumably retired immediately He never again was seen alive About 830 this morning Cameron arrived at the building and proceeded to the second floor where their offices and the generals gen-erals apartments are located A servant girl who keeps the rooms rapped at the door and inquired if General Belknap was out of the city saying she several times since Sunday morning had tried the doors but found them locked The door was then forced open and the body found lying partially uncovered on the bed The left arm was left rigidly toward the head and the left hand tightly clenched as though death came while he was in a convulsion and he had the bedclothes somwhat disarranged disar-ranged A pnysician was summoned and after making a brief examination he expressed ex-pressed the opinion that death resulted from a stroke of annoDlexv The coroner soon afterward arrived and took the body in charge An autopsy disclosed the fact that the immediate cause of death was inflammation of the inner lining of the heart Mrs Belknap who was in New York was summoned by telegraph Also the generals son Hugh from Chicago For some years Belknap has been a constant con-stant sufferer from gout In February ha had so severe an attack that he hardly left his room for three months or more During Dur-ing that time he lost in flesh between thirty and forty pounds Since then he has been in poor health and in consequence of his long illness his business suffered This worried him at times WASHINGTON Oct 13Mrs Belknap nas decided that the General shall bo buried at Arlington cemetorv and the funeral will probably take place Thursday |
