Six radio spots, sponsored by the Universith of Utah English Department and Utai Ihvismn of Fine Arts, received $6,906 The radio damas will explore such questions as the status of the artist in Utah and whether or not Utah should be mined for natural resources at the expense of natural beauty. The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies had two lectuie projects approved, one for $4,723 on Challenges to Traditional Society in Southewestern Utah and $4,460 for Social and Cultural Change in Utah and the Mountain West. A lecture senes, coal-stud- y Public grant A grant to expand research of economical ways of converting coal to liquid and gaseous fuels has been awarded to the University of Utah. Dr. Wendell H. Wiser, proiessor of fuels engineering, n wnl direct the research, under a four-yea- r, contract which provides the grant. It is the second largest coal research grant ever awarded to a university by the federal government, according to Dr Wiser. It soould almost double the amount of research conducted at the university m the past few years "This contract has particular value for Utah, Dr. Wiser said, because the coal here is highly volatile and best suited for conversion to liquids and gases. Assisted by six faculty members, 18 graduate students and five fellows.
