Show Letters to Editor (continued from previous page) THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, March 21, 2001 - Page 13 After recovering from the shock, we visited with several members of the Board. the greatest respect for our Board, who serve under very difficult circumstances with little remuneration or thanks for their efforts. We did not get much information. We wonder if the punishment fits the crime, lb us, this situation is a little like a world series team pulling their best pitcher in the 7th inning ofa tie game. Would it hurt to let the game play out? Would it hurt to see what happens with just a little more time? This district has three years to not renew without cause on ' certified contracts. Next year this school will have its fourth principal in four years. Not a recipe for a strong, effective, education institution. Saddest of all, when all the dust settles; when the bruised egos mend; when Dr. Peterson haa left this community and we start over again, it is the children who will be the poorer for it. Very Sincerely, We have Faculty concerned about school Issues Dear Editor We the undersigned faculty and staff at the Albert R. Lyman Middle School wish to express our appreciation to Dr. Lloyd Peterson for the many positive things which have occurred in our school this year. Dr. Peterson was advised hist Friday that his contract would not be re newed next year. Some of the improvements at ARL this year are as follows: 1. Stuffing cut significantly 2. Tardiness reduced. 3. Swearing virtu ally eliminated 4. Better conduct in the lunch room 5. Significant vandalism last year not repeated 6. Better attendance 7. Increased respect for teachers and peers through the Praise Notes" program 8. Intensive student services instead of suspension 9. Parent lunches with the Principal each week 10. Student Council created and working well 11. Better student conduct in assemblies 12. Many more quality assemblies of student lockers 14. Heritage day assemblies than ever before 13. Re-ueach at ethnic group ARL 15. Golden Mustang award program for honoring outstanding students and teachers 16. First ever School Fair 17. First ever Middle School Graduation with capsgowns and a big-naspeaker 18. Improved academic excellence. We deeply appreciate the many things Dr. Peterson has done to make this a better school. The firing of Dr. Peterson occurred Friday without the knowledge of anyone on the staff Anyone who affects great positive change usually makes enemies. Conditions at the school, which the Board asked Dr. Peterson to correct, exist because of people. Those people resent change. When an outsider came in and tried to do what was good for children, he offended people here and at the district, because it meant changing the way some things have been done for a long time. However, almost everything we have observed at ARL this year has been good for children, if not for those with their own agendas. ol Rex Jensen, Kline Carroll, M.L. The girls were lovely and talented, and the guys were well-groom- ed very careful that the girls didnt fall during the routines. The costumes were most attractive, and there was not one second during the entire performance when there was not a group on the floor demonstrating a different dance with enthusiasm, polish and smiles galore. Thank you. Blue Mountain Entertainment, Southern Utah University and your Ballroom Dancers for an evening of spiritual dancing. Well done and congratulations. Sincerely, Dr. D.N.
