The death of Mr. Smith added one more to the roll of those killed In automobile accidents. On October 29, 1985, the total killed for this year In Cook county, Dllnols .alone, wu 795 persons. The total number killed In the United Statee UJ averages about 86,000 persons, annual- j jly. This, of course; does not take Into r 3 :acconnt the vast army, numbering hun- 3 jdreda of thousands of persona, who hare been Incapacitated for work. Add to this, the suffering and deprivation of those who were dependent for 'Support upon those made cripples for. life; and we have a shocking and heart breaking picture of the crimson stain which stretches across our country. Some people think statlstlce ars cheap. Perhaps they are; but the flagrancy of this crimson stain can be told In no better way than In terms of From tha sinking of tbs' figures; Titanic to the recent wreck of the air-ahlp, Akron, six catastrophes have occurred which have killed 8,162 persons. M But, this "same number of people lose ther lives in into accidents every 3 86 days." From 1919 to the dose of . 3 1988; in the United States alone, there J I were 848,046 automobile deaths. One I : might srgus that the cause of these I fatalities was defective ports In the cars themselves, but this idea la at once dismissed when we remember that 92.4 per cent of care in accidents were In good condition and less than one-huof one per cent were dne to defective mechanism. We are Informed that 84 per cent of accidents occur In elsar weather, leaving 16 per cent for foggy weather and winter's snow and sleet; 74 per cent occur on dry surfaced roads, leaving 20 per cent for ellppety roads; all of which clearly Indicates that the cause of this "crimson tain" Is nothing but reckless, careless, thoughtless driving. It is high tima that this menace be regarded u a moral problem, and that tha solution be found In an appeal to the conscience of every person driving S car. Let conscience compel obedience to this resolution! "I will observe the Golden Rule." S' lf Wasters Nivipapar Uslsa. |
