Show Page 4 Work with your doctor to make choices about breast cancer screening A radiologist who examines thousands of mammograms each year for signs of breast cancer says that despite occasionally differing mammography guidelines, healthy women face manageable screening choices. And one of those choices at this point is not to seek a technological substitute for mammography, says Dr. Robyn Birdwell, assistant professor of radiology at Stanford University. Despite media attention and aldiscussions about high-tecternatives such as MRI or sonography, Birdwell says a healthy Sonography is wonderful for examining a known and suspicious growth, but it isnt very useful as a routine screening device. Likewise, MRI is a wonderful research tool you can see a lot of detail in the breast but its not a general screening tool for breast cancer. Not only is it more expensive, but there is also still a great deal to learn about all of the information the MRI vides to the interpreting radiologist, Birdwell says. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in U.S. women, exceeded only by lung cancer. It is the leading cause of cancer deaths among U.S. women aged 40 to 55, according to the American Cancer Society. Depression may be biological in nature Thursday, February 5 , ; mammography screenings at 40. And there is some recent evidence that the mammogram will be more accurate if its done early in the menstrual cycle, notes Birdwell. Thats what a recent Canadian study suggests, and although more studies are needed to prove the point, women might justifiably feel a bit more reassured if they schedule the test during the first two weeks of their menstrual cycle, she ' says. But mammography is only half the picture, she adds. The other essential element is the breast exam performed by the womans doctor. A thorough physical examination of the breasts by a health care professional can spot certain signs that may influence the screening or call for a more comprehensive diagnostic test, Birdwell says. An interpersonal relationship and communication with your doctor is still crucial, Birdwell says. Most women can tell if the breast exam they are receiving is cursory or thorough, and choosing a doctor who will perform this vital function careful ly can make a lifesaving differ- Friday, February 6 Juab School District. According to an article written by Kevin Dwyer in the January NEA Today, a magazine for educators, depressive illnesses are biological illnesses related to imbalanced or disrupted brain chemistry. Dwyer, a certified school psychologist and assistant executive director of the National Association of School Psychologists, says that in children, as well as adults, depression should be treated by a professional. A lot of kids who are depressed are misdiagnosed as attention deficit disorder ADD because symptoms can be similar, said Dwyer. This misdiagnosis can be very problematic because the medications for each disorder are very different and a childs symptoms of depression may be masked if they are being medicated for ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder).
