Patent office records tell of an inventive genius who evolved an instrument for opening a lock when the key had been mislaid. The thought that such a device might prove more of a boon to the burglar than to the absent-mindehouseholder had not occurred to the inventor. There was also a cigarette holder that mechanically ejected its own fag. The device worked beautifully until it shot a burning butt into the eye of an innocent bystander. Another contrivance, a pocket wallet, containing a revolver which automatically discharged when handed to a highway man, was proved, after several funerals, to be slightly unreliable. Mining tax laws may be like these useless inventions. They represent labor, thought and genius, yet they may They set up prove a greater menace than a boon. means of ' providing revenue and lightening public burdens, but how is one to know that they will not destroy all need for revenue and public relief, by driving industry out d . ' of the state. of A. Schreiner Mexico from A dispatch City by George the Universal Press states that a number of Mexican mines have petitioned the government for the right to discontinue operations. Grandually dwindling profits, exhaustion of rich deposits and lack of capital available for prospecting, excessive taxation and government regulation are some of the reasons assigned for the cheerless outlook. The condition in Utah is strikingly similar. Rich surface deposits have been exhausted. Costs and risks attendant upon finding new mines are mounting yearly. Production from new mines must replace that from old mines, or Utahs leading industry will speedily languish and prosperity depart to other regions. Anyone believing that Utah mines have been evading taxation should read the brief presented Monday by A. G. Mackenzie, secretary of the Utah chapter of the American Mining Congress, to the revenue and taxation committee of the lower house of the Utah state legislature, who introduces the subject in the following manner: The state's official recognition of the industry consists of taxing and inspecting it. There is no state officer or state organization charged with the advancement of mining as in other states and countries." The statement that excessive taxation will seriously cripple an industry like mining is not mere surmise or speculation. The iron mining situation in Minnesota is an illustration. Excessive taxation there has resulted in closing more of the iron mines and has thrown several thouthan sand men out of employment in the last few years. The Minnesota legislature now haa under consideration several measures to decrease the taxeg on the iron mines. These measures are supported by the Minnesota tax commission and Minnesota officials generally in the hope that the abandoned properties and comunities can be rehabilitated and development of the industry resumed." g-- S-- S-- g-- 4-- 13 -ll man' agar of tha United Btataa Smelting, Riflning and Mining companp, and Mr. Eardlap, returned Monuap from a mine examination In tha southern pert of tho atqte. first Anyone wishing to gain band and colorful information eon' some In parts of earning the roada southern Utah should consult Mr, Eardlep who can paint aa moving a picture of tho autolet In herd luck eg one would llko to hear.
