Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, August 25-28, 2018 Prep sports spotlight BEN RAMSEY The Park Record Boys’ golf The Park City High School golf team expanded its lead in Region 11 to 56 strokes over second-place Tooele during a conference tournament at Schneiter’s Riverside Golf Course in Ogden. The Miners lead the region scoreboard individually, too, with six of the region’s top eight players hailing from PCHS. Jack Wright of PCHS and Tooele’s Bridger Holmes are currently tied for lowest score in Region 11 with a total count of 359 each for the season so far. They are followed by Park City’s Wyatt Peterson (364), Ryan Wright (367), and Parker Cutt (374). Park City’s Griffin Ward and Peyton Thevenot of Tooele hold the seventh-place spot in the region with a score of 376, followed by Park City’s Dean Tsandes with a 379. The Miners’ next conference competition will be at the Mount Ogden Golf Course in Ogden on Wednesday, Sept. 5. girls’ tennis The Park City Miners girls tennis team will take on Juan Diego Soaring Eagle at home on Tuesday. It will be the Miners’ first game of the season after winning the Class 4A state championship last year. The Wildcats, who brought a state championship to the Uintas in 2017, were 1-0 going into the weekend, having beaten San Juan, a Class 2A team, 56-13. The Miners, however, were 0-1 as of Thursday, having lost in an abbreviated rivalry revival (Only one half was played due to lightning) against Wasatch 13-7. The east-west rivalry between the Miners and Wasatch was ended six years ago when ganization. But he said the club was in a good place to change. “We have a really good foundation in place here,” he said. “Bringing these clubs together; there was a lot of work done there with the integration team. As a ninth-grader, Grissom still goes to Treasure Mountain Junior High, but, like Perry, she said the cross-country team has been supportive. Grissom was followed by sophomore Samantha Herman, who finished 10th with a time of 22:05.7, and Stephanie Burnham, who finished 12th with a time of 22:26.4. Cuttitta said those four runners would likely make up the leading pack, though sophomores Ellie Anderson, Josie Marshall and Shelby Oraskovich also had good performances. They finished 15th, 17th and 23rd respectively. Training pays off The boys team, untouched by injuries, is already off to a good start, according to Cuttitta. The Miners’ Megan Lusher scored the last goal with 10 minutes left on the clock, finishing the game 5-2 in favor of the home team. “Naturally, as our first game, we did get a little excited and started playing the other team’s game, but the big picture was TANZI PROPST/THE PARK RECORD Reese McGrath, a senior at Park City High School, approaches the finish of the boys cross-country race on Thursday. “They are much improved from last year,” he said. “We got most people back who ran at state, and Reese (McGrath), who finished third today, had a huge track season and really is coming along.” McGrath, a junior, finished with a time of 17:05.5, finishing third behind Jorge Vasquez of Bonneville with a time of 16:26.9 and Chris Allred of Ogden who took second with a time of 16:31.0. “This is the fastest team that I have ever been here for,” McGrath said after the race. “We actually have a competitive team now instead of one or two people that can run decently fast.” The team is currently led by McGrath, senior Scott McMullin, who took ninth with a time of 18:02.4, junior Sheldon Vanover, who took 11th with a time of 18:05, sophomore Kaleb Barnhart, who took 13th with a time of 18:19, and sophomore Bennett Diamond, who finished 17th with a time of 18:27. Cuttitta and McGrath said the team’s strength is a result of a greater level of dedication to the team and th sport. “I’m not really sure what’s happened,” McGrath said. “A lot of people have started caring more and a bunch of new people joined who seem to really enjoy the sport so we have a good team.” Cuttitta hasn’t given the team any specific goals as far as state or region performance, but said he is looking forward to seeing what more they can do. “Honestly, it’s a huge improvement from last year already in the boys,” he said. “And I’ve told them, ‘just make individual improvements every race and we’ll see where we end up.’” The Miners will get a sense of where they stand among their peers on Sept. 5, when the team will compete at the Cottonwood Complex in Salt Lake against most Region 11 teams. we were able to pull it together and hold together in the end,” senior goalkeeper Emme Keizer said. “It made us all really happy with the end result.” Keizer senior midfielder Catalina Conn said they were confident in this year’s team, and in the program that their coach, Micaela Carriel, is building during her second year leading Park City. “There are a lot of girls coming up that are really excited to be here and a lot of girls that are really committed to making the team stronger,” Conn said. Junior Shay Smith is wearing the team’s No. 10 jersey this season, though Hoglin, wearing No. 20, and Burnham, No. 15, put up the majority of shots on the Scots. “Even though we have re-C turning varsity players that were rostered, last year to this year it’s a completely new team,” Carriel said. “So girls are playing all over the place (in positions) that maybe they are not used to. It’s a completely different dynamic, and we are in a completely differC ent formation as well.” Carriel said the team is stillT switching through formationsl looking for the best fit.
