How was Leonard served his country “nobly in time of peace?” Leonard was born in Rockton peace” sr's Wisconsin the oldest of four children He regales his listeners with tales of his early elementary years in a schoolhouse which boasted indoor toilets The school did not have running water needed for flushing and water had to be brought in for that purpose “But we did have indoor restrooms” he laughs In high school he was a member of the track team and was the first “country” boy to finish as Salutatorian (second highest) of his grading class Going on to college on loans scholarships and as a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) he continued his interest in track and was a track team member for two years He graduated in 1942 with an agricultural degree in Animal and Dairy Husbandry Only July 4 1942 Leonard joined the roster of active duty j sonnel in the US Army his active duty career During Leonard received training in both fantry and the Quartermaster Corps While serving as Quartermaster Corps instructor in Seattle Washington he met his future wife Miss Ruby Killpack of Delta Ruby was filling her internship in Dietetics at King Country Hospital at the time She received her RD from the hospital Their marriage united two families which have many veterans father William Ruby’s Killpack was a veteran of WYVI an uncle Jack Killpack WWII brother Ward WWII brothers Don and Hal both Korean Leo Sperry and Jack Howarth WWII Leonard’s father William too was well a veteran of WWI as as an uncle Ed Vodak WWII found another uncle Adolph serving as well as a bother Warren and tv o Hrothrrs-in-- ‘ ‘law '"Bradley ' Spink land 'Thomas Wilson In addition he has a nephew who is a career officer in the Air Force Early 1945 found Leonard aboard ship headed for Luzon The Phillipines His outfit was the target of four or five night attacks by Japanese troops during which several Americans and many Japanese were killed From Luzon Leonard and his men went to Finchhaven New Guinia He was assigned to the Phillipines to undergo training for an invasion of Japan When the US delivered the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Leonard was again aboard ship This time in the Yokohoma Harbor Japan awaiting invasion orders Rather than becoming a part of invasion forces he became part of the Japanese Occupation Forces He was in Japan for over a year He was promoted to Captain while on duty in Japan He visited the and sites oi Hiroshima Nagasaki Discharge was right over the corner this young captain and he was Lewis ordered to return to Ft Washington to receive same But this was not to be for a short while Some of the troops contracted cholera and He received the ship was quarantined his discharge in June 1946 and immediately joined the Army Reserves He and his wife came to Delta to seek of Continued page 1st Voting results 2 Delta farmer and Air Force Reserve Officer Warren Jensen topped the Millard County voting race for while Commissioner Fillmore businessman Abe Johnson won the race in the two political battles of local interest in Tuesday’s elections Jensen defeated Russell Greathouse 2924 to 2384 Johnson defeated Jack McBride 2778 to 2621 o ' O Abe Johnson County Commissioner James Hansen District Congressional Also of local interest First District cumbent Congressman James Hansen thoroughly trounced Milt Abrams in Millard County as elsewhere in the district by a margin of 3857 to 1280 Many political positions in the area saw incumblijslide into new terms as they ran unojftwse Such was the case for Cary G Peterson State Senator District No 28 and Joseph M Moody Intermountain Power Project Highlights Station The overall Generating facilities are 43 percent complete Unit and common facilities are 56 percent Engineering is 893 percent complete and common facilities and for Unit 379 percent complete for Unit 2 -- Agreements for coal in excess of the required four million tons annually have been signed --Over 3500 manual and construction workers are employed on site --The Agency has completed all but $350 million of its total financing requirement prior to commercial complete the 308 total contracts to be 263 contracts have been awarded awarded operation AjL A young Captain Vodak during WWII fL ' o O yi t 1 -
