Despite outscormg their opponents 40 to 16 over the course of the year, DSC finished the 2006 season with a record. The Lady Rebels averaged 2.48 goals a game on 16.7 shots on goal per contest. DSC is returning seven girls from last year's squad, including leading scorer Mikala Wilkes, who played 15 games, scoring eight goals with three assists. She scored on 26 percent of her shots on goal. Being together really has helped our team build team cohesion, Fanene said. DSC head coach Ron Haun said that despite some challenges, the team has its strengths. This year, really the beginning of our program, we are really young but also have good depth," he said before the game. The depth is being tested at some of the positions, namely comerback and running back as the team has suffered many losses of players to injuries. But Haun estimated the team is over 60 percent freshmen, and this will enable the team to evaluate many of the players on the team. The Rebels play host to 41-1- n Robyn Wall with five goals and Nicolette Trickey with four. The Rebels will face four teams they faced last year, which might help their cause because they went against those partic- ular teams. They played one exhibition game this year as a warm up before the season actually started. DSC took on the Aggies of Utah State University on Aug. 18 and finished the tie. game in a The Rebels had only seven shots on goal com- pared to the Aggies' 33 goal attempts. Wendy Stratford scored DSC's only goal of the day. The Aggies had chances to put the Rebels away but could not convert a couple of golden opportunities late in the game. The Rebels officially opened their season on Saturday against the Cougars of Cal State San win. Marcos with a 2-- 0 Coach Linda Huddleston said the Rebels' performance was awesome. "It was a really fun game, she said. "The team has great chemistry. The contest on Saturday was all Rebels. Wilkes had four shots on goal including one unassisted goal, her first of the season; she also scored her first goal of the year. Huddleston said she feels the quality of her returning players is invaluable to the makeup of this years squad. The girls have done a great job, Huddleston said. It is a different level of competition, and they have definitely stepped it up. The Rebels have shown a lot of athleticism as well in these first two games, and it is evident in their amount of shots on goal, assists and blocked goals. The girls have been working very hard to stay conditioned in tre Huddleston said. They came back stronger and faster than last season. There is no telling how the season will go for the Rebels, but for now the future looks very bright for them.
