Show CLIPPER Friday, July 16, 1993 9 Youth Teens offer new solutions to old problems Editor's note: Students at Mueller Park Jr. High completed an assignment at the end of the school year to write their opinion of world and locaj affairs as letters to the editor. Following are a few of the student's letters. When another country needs help, we should insist on a leader in that country who believes in the democratic process. This requirement would be a prerequisite for economic aid. The aid shall be paid back over a period of time decided upon by both countries. The payment can be trade or gold. Leaders and others in government shall be selected by secret ballot. In emergencies, the United States with consent of Congress may take other actions to preserve in Board should vote for what's best for students Editor, Some kids hate it, some teachers love it, some kids love it, some teachers hate it. The up side of year round school is teachers teach more, kids learn more, teachers get more money, and the kids get to play more sports. The school board likes the idea of year round school because it makes the classes smaller, parents don't have to worry about their children as much. Students get to spend more time with their friends, students have a higher chance of a college degree. The down side is teachers have less time to get ready for class, students and teachers have less time for family, higher chance of a student getting hit by a car, higher chance of a fire hazard. I think that the school board should vote on what's best for the students, the teachers and the parents. Jacob Wynder 8th grader the peace and encourage democracy. Leon Naccarato To act or not to act, that is the question Editor, I have been wondering why we don't have a drama club in this school. There are many students asking the same question, "To act or not to act?" I know of many students that want to have a drama club in this school. In Bountiful and Woods Cross High Schools you must try out to be in theater. If we had a drama club here we would have more successful actors and actresses at a high school level. I think we should have a drama club or acting class here that you wouldn't have to tryout for. Not only would it help them when they want to act later it would also build their self esteem. Jon Phillips 8th grader Countries should follow Destroyers rules for help of rain forest suffocating the world MPJH Editor, Well, it's that time again, when other countries need help and here we are left out in the cold. Why don't these other countries take care of themselves? According to CNN-Tim- e poll, 52 percent of the people in the United States oppose helping Bosnia. Many people say we have done enough and should let them take care of their own affairs. President Clinton is also saying that U.S. troops may be sent to Bosnia to aid them in their problem. He promises he won't let U.S. troops go into Bosnia if there is a risk to the troops. He can't guarantee their safety and there is risk of losing a loved one in a fight. If we did help, the cost to our people would be great. Our national debt is greater than four trillion dollars and we are trying to reduce that, but it doesn't help to give other countries aid if we need the money ourselves. Those other countries should learn to help themselves or they will never know how to function by themselves. Last of all, if we help, we usually don't get paid back. The U.S. is already going through hard times and I dont see much help from other countries. I propose solution: the following Editor, Why are people cutting down the rain forests? Don't they know that they are cutting off our air supply? Our rain forests supplies us with quantities of trees and plants. With a lot of trees and plants there is more air. By cutting them down they are basically trying to suffocate our world. Not only does it hold trees, but it holds flowers and animals that we haven't even found. The trees and plants are homes to animals and bugs. They hold cures to certain diseases, maybe AIDS. There is a pattern that starts with trees and ends with us. The people who are having them cut down are doing it for land and profits. Is it worth killing for all the profit? Native tribes live in the rain forests and we are chasing them off like the white man has done throughout history. Why can't they recycle? Why can't they stop? Todd Bowen 8th grade MPJH Hats are not gang related Editor Are hats accessories or are they gang related? Thats a question the schools have been trying to answer for years. Most students would like to be able to wear hats during school hours. The schools in Davis County allow girls to wear hats. They say that it goes with their outfits. If a boy wears a White Sox shirt he should be able to wear a White Sox hat. The reason that a boy can't is because the schools think that he is in a gang. If people say you should wear hats to block the sun, why won't the schools let us? Maybe they want us to get skin cancer and die. Boys like to wear hats to play baseball and other sports. What's wrong with wearing them at school? Boys wear them after school so it shouldnt matter. People like hats and I think they should be able to wear them. housing facilities. This is where I'm concerned. have recently been up on Bountiful Blvd. and was not happy with what I saw. We have already built homes very far up on the I mountain. I have been informed that they are going to build a new subdivision up by the "B on the mountain. I believe that that is way too far. We are taking away too much food and living area from our wildlife. I have heard many people complain about animals coming into their yards in search for food. They don't realize that they are where the problem began. propose that we stop going farther up the mountain with our homes. We wouldn't like it if someone was taking away our homes and I really doubt the animals like us taking away their I homes. Robbie Gerber 8th grade Too much sex, violence on television Editor, Almost every person watches at least three hours of T.V. every day. Do you know what they watch? More sex and violence has been on T.V. than ever before. If you turn on the T.V. almost every channel you will see, either has some violence or some kind of sex scene. Since sex has been on T.V., more charts show more teenagers have had sex and gotten pregnant and contracted a disease. I think we should try to take off all the violence and sex off T.V., or at least until p.m. 1 1 Jill Blackburn 8th grade MPJH Joey Bott 8th grade MPJH Utah's not nuclear dump Editor, Everyone can agree we do have a problem. The problem is that we have a lot of nuclear waste and nowhere to put it all. Some people think that we should put it in Utah. .That nuclear waste could kill all of us in Utah! The power plants which are producing this waste are willing to give us five million dollars for each barrel we take. That is a lot of money, but I don't want to put a price on my life. If there was an earthquake, and one of those barrels leaked, it would get in our grand water and cause many problems. We would have to live underground in nuclear fallout shelters, and I really don't want to do that. I think that the places that produce the waste should keep it and bury it there or we could buy a big island in the ocean where no plants and animals live and then put it all there. I hope they can find a good solution for the problem. Outstanding scholars at Mueller Ninth grade scholars of the year for 1992-9Park Jr. High are Dan Higgs and Michelle Hatch. 3 Nick Hoskins 8th grader MPJH Homes on hillside threaten the wildlife Editor, Bountiful is known for its nice environment. For this reason many people are in search for homes here. People now are even offering very large amounts of money for homes that are not even listed for sale. of This is promoting the-gro- Award of Excellence Kath Kendell and Matt Williams, ninth grade students at Mueller Park Jr. High received Awards of Excellence for school year. their performance during |
