EBeaiufty off tilhie irnveir caDDs fto DocaD CDffnzeinis By Virginia Harrington Feature Writer Some members of the Hatch family in the Vernal area are well known for their experience and knowledge of local rivers and the scenery that surrounds them. Wendy Hatch recently shared some of that experience with the Vernal Rotary Club by means of a slide show of parts ol the Green River. Hatch said the rivers are a resource ignored by too many local residents. Other people travel across the nation or half way around the world to enjoy the peaceful quiet of the river or the adventure of its white water areas while many people who have lived here all their lives have never been on the river. She noted that river running Oittl be done as a one day expedition or a week long vacation and everything in between. Running the river can be an independent experience using personally owned equipment or equipment rented from local river running businesses. It can be done in rafts that hold an entite family or in individual canoes or kayaks. For those with no experience or who want to sit back and enjoy the ride while someone else does the woik, guided expeditions with experienced guides are available through several outlets in the area. Russ and Cindy Perry, both Rotary members, commented that the guided expeditions include meals that rival the finest restauiants. They said Cindy are gourmet meals, Perry. Wendy Hatch said the scenery for any tpp, whether for a day or a week, is unput allcled in its beauty and often includes great views of wildlife as well as unique fauna. Big horn sheep can often be seen stand ing on the dill's along the river. She noted that in spite of the di ought, l luning Gorge Dam keeps enough water llowing down the Gu'en River to make expeditions possible and even provides some aieas of white water. She also said last year's wildfires did not destroy the beauty of the area, even at Jones Hole which suffered the most damage from the fires. Ted Hatch, who has spent most of his adult life running expeditions through the Grand Canyon down the said Ladore Coloiado River, Canyon is as beautiful as the Grand Canyon, just on a smaller scale. He also said his office is already booking lours for the 2004 river running season so he encourages those interested in taking a trip down any of the areas rivers to book their time soon. Spring is just around the corner and river running time will be here soon. TrUHIMS CFtymP IJIiIXIDuD$CO tagging dates set Once again it is time for the and FFA livestock projects to be 4-- H tagged.
