Show marysvale Marys vale branch train mail service to be stopped post office not to renew railroad mail contract knox bradford executive vice president of the denver ario rio grande western railroad informed the directors of the richfield chamber of commerce tuesday night that train mail service over the thistle marysvale branch line will be discontinued this year it if a new contract is not signed the post office department has notified the railroad that no now contract will be signed mr bradford stated that an experiment with highway mail trucks is being contemplated by the post office department the chamber directors feel that the stoppage of the t train rain mail service would have serious repercussions in the business operations of south central utah and cause a great deal of inconvenience it is their opinion that truck service would not prove nearly as efficient and that the schedules would bo be i i difficult and elpe expensive asive the expediency of contracted trucks during the holiday rush was doubted the directors unanimously went on record to contact the utah congressional leaders and the postmaster general to urge the signing of a new contract with the branch line of the denver rio grande the chamber went a step further and is contacting other civic organization tiOng along the route to aid in the protest the meeting with the chamber was the first step mr bradford had taken but he planned to discuss the problem with with other towns along theline the line he pointed out that for many years the mall mail and passenger train has been run tor for the con ven vencenc lenc of the post office on a special contract beca because se the train leaves salt lake city during the early morning hours so that the last mail is picked up there is very little passenger service even with the special contract the mail and passenger train lost in 1947 and will loose an estimated this year |
