Show Farm Bureau Advice On Drought Aid Over a month ago numerous contacts were made by repres . entatives of Farm .Bureau In areas affected by drought. Every possible attempt was made to determine the extnt of drought damage and to find out whether or not government relief was desired. At that time farmers and llvestockmen replied that although the drought was extensive and damage considerable they felt that a request for government help was not advisable as ye because of the limited benefits ordinarily real lied and because of restrictions and limitations which always accompany such action. Should conditions worsen, Farm Iur-eau stands ready to make such moves as have In the past brought the desired results. You shoutd therefore be alert to distress areas which may develop. The procedure is to work directly with the county drought committee and the county Com. mlssloners through which a formal request to the State Drought Relief Committee Is made. If the state committee finds, after Investigation, that the areas are In enough trouble to Justify action, a formal request will t. aulilmltted to the Secretary of Agriculture through the Governor. The county and state drought committees consist of well qualified men who are acquainted with the situation. However, your assistance in assembling Information, and your advising the State Farm Bureau of your findings, will be very helpful, At present a request has come from western Rox Elder County where the situation Is unquestionably bad. Other areas Including Tooele, Emery, Oar-fleld and Iron Counties are under investigation. Care must be exercised to follow the proper procedure. Any attempt to by-pass the properly established processes, such as going directly to the Governor or the Secretary of Agriculture will not bring results and in some instances will injure the chances of aid where the real need exists. 'tie sure that the farm people In your area do not associate themselves with anv movement which takes on the appearance of a "Cattle Caravan" or other activity by-groups or organizations known to "run to government" with every difficulty which confronts us. This Is usually. ror publicity purposes In an attempt to attract attention to their organic atlon rather than a genuine attempt to determine need and work out a solution. Unfortunately some of this has already been done, and It "will be only by the help that you can give and the work of the drought committees hat action will be possible where it Is needed. The Governor, State Drought Committee and the Secretary ot Agriculture fortunately are fully aware of the purposes behind the methods used by publicity seeking organizations , so that the adverse erfect of this action Is not too serious, but we must not Identify ourselves with any such radical action. |
