Show THE UNNATURAL DEMISE OF THE GOBLET OF VENUS For cons the Goblet of Venus stood precariously on its eight inch sandstone base near Cottonwood Wash in San Juan County. The ‘goblet’ was six or seven feet wide and estimated to weigh five or six tons; yet it all rested on a stem that was not much thicker than a man’s leg. The Goblet and the 40 acres surrounding it were at one time a part of Natural Bridges National Monument. But shortly after World War Il, the Goblet's close proximity to the new road to Elk Ridge proved to be its downfall—literally. Although it was never proved, it is believed a group of young men from Blanding drove their jeep to the base of the rock and pulled it down with a chain. A million years to be created. A minute to destroy. |
