Show CEU Thursday February 26 1987 8 Instructor sculpts bronze eagle to grace campus by Shane Gonzales or the Kaffir Staff The Spring of 1988 will bring a new and proud work of art the the campus entrance of the College of Eastern Utah Through the funds provided by fees from this year’s student body James L Young CEU’s art instructor has been provided with materials to sculpt a life size golden eagle The figure stands about five feet from the talons to wing tip with a wing span of about four fccL The project was started mi January 1 1987 by Young and is presently a clay figure sculpted on a skeletal steel frame The model will be completed by Young and sent to Wasatch Bronze Works in Lehi where it will be cast and finshed sometime this fall or winter When completely cast and the will mascot polished weigh 700 approximately pounds It will then be delivered to CEU and erected on sandstone pillars between the BDAC and Student Activity Center next Spring in celebration of CEU’s 50th anniversity Young who has been an instructor at CEU for the past 25 years spends his free afternoons the feathers and shaping in the scuplting eagle precise detail He considers the piece which is his largest sculpted bird so far one of the most enjoyable he has worked on and plans to present it to other institutions with the Golden Eagle as their mascot and possibly the Salt Lake Golden Eagles Hockey Organization Athletics fondly remembered by retiring Petersens by Avan Thayn of the Eagle Staff Retirement to a lot of people means sitting back and relaxing through the golden years But the pace of life for Joy and Bill Petersen will not lessen after working a combined total of 61 years at the College of Eastern Utah For 26 years Mrs Petersen has taught dance here and will continue on instructing at her daughter's dance studio in Salt Lake City teaching a new kind of aerobics called social dance aerobics and body conditioning She will also be supervising training located where Tiny Tots University is now The baseball and softball fields were located where the library and science buildings stand while the cafeteria and library were both part of the main building The number of buildings has almost doubled since he first Orlando Florida and next year in Western Europe Her husband will also be commuting with her to help his Carbon College and Aaron Jones was principal and president Aaron Jones Hall was later named after the second president of the college As for dormitories they were basketball who came through here and beat us" he laughed Also strong in his mind are the trips the basketball team went " jn We played eight games in nine days in four states" he said involved She has also presided over the Women's Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference (WICAC) cheerleaders and has worked strongly with the Blue Debs drill team taking them on many trips including a cruise to Mexico She said that she will miss Petersen has been in many as pecs of CEU's physical education Among them she coached gymnastics for 12 years and organized a swim team program ' v '"'jHOMU"--- '- lx ne teams competing in er touring girls team from Texas up Mrs Kansas In Kansas we could get our rooms for $150 then go out dinner and have a good for $150" "We traveled in personal cars until the CEU booster club Ixiught us a small school bus clogging daughter build a dance studio They hope to eventually buy a home there They also plan to travel and spend time with their ' 12 grandchildren They have a grand-daughtwho is a class two gymnast who Mrs Petersen will chaperon while competing in different meets in the Western United States Her husband wifi hopefully spend his time fishing and roping throughout Utah After 35 years Bill Petersen is one of two faculty members who has been here the longest and has witnessed many changes The other faculty member who shares this distinction is Dr A1 Trujillo When Petersen came here Carbon High School was part of mediocre bunch of Christmas trees People danced downstairs and "We went to Colorado Nebraska Wyoming and and choreographing her daughter's who will be community to get their support The community gave it and we are still here" He also remembers how down athletics was at the time "There was a I’ - r Kill Gentry and I drove and we never had an accident in 35 years" Joy Petersen came here He feels the campus is almost complete with the exception of a football field and hates to leave now that it is almost whole Both teachers have enjoyed Athletic the Bunnel-Dmitric- h and Center regret having to leave after only two years in it but neither will be staying completely away "Ill be coming back to give the people here a bad time" Petersen quipped and his wife looks forward to seeing the Blue Debs perform next year The couple will be taking many memories with them Ono that stands out in Peterson's mind is when Mayor J Braken Lee was going to close the college "We went out in the down One of the highlights of his career happened in 1965 when the CEU basketball team won third place at the National Junior College Basketball Tournament in Hutchison Uonsns The highlights of Mrs Petersens career include the time when she was both volleyball and softball coach and both teams beat Snow College "We haven't beat them since" she said She also remembers the many homecoming activities the college had and many floats The college decorating also hac outstanding formal dances at the Elks and she would choreograph floorshows for them The funnest dance she recalls was in the library "The library had just been built and didn't have There was anything in it an orchestra in the middle of the floor It was around Christmas time and we brought in a whole Hill Petersen which she’s still proud ot "We were the only junior college to have one" It was built around two girls Jill Spencer Finley and Kerstin The latter Tucker Severcn moved to Illinios and was the first woman swimmer to get on a men's team after she took them to court over it They both went to Western Regionals in Texas and took twelvth place which was great considering the competition included Olympic swimmers" most teaching ballroom dancing "I've taught it three quarters every year for 26 years and have had several thousand students" She keeps in touch with many of those students and has gone to a lot of their weddings She added that a lot of her students are now coaching or teaching dance in high school or "It gives me private studios pleasure to teach someone who has never danced before (continued on tmge 7) |
