Denise Kabonic of the Kaicle Staff Changes seem inevitable each year This will especially be the when the College of case Eastern Utah's scholarship program faces a major change during the 1987-8- 8 year The program will give recognition to academically high students who have a grade point average of 3S w above by offering those students a tuition scholarship plus housing in CElTs academic dorm The new program has never before been offered to CEU students and most likely has never been offered to high academic students in the history of higher education in Utah The academic program's purpose is to attract students and to from all over Utah promote public awareness of the academic quality at CEU Part of this program is the conversion of one of CElTs three residence halls into an academic or honors hall President Michael Petersen said students who maintain a GPA of 35 or better and are involved in college activities are for eligible residency in the new honors hall The new hall which will be ready by next fall will house about 90 students The other half of the academic is the program establishment of 40 to 50 academic scholarships which will be awarded next fall The scholarships will include tuition fees and housing "Students with superior academic and performance extracurricular involvement deserve the same recognition as athletes" Petersen said "Well make a firm commitment that if (continued on page 6) Jay Andrus named as dean of students by Rebecca Wiruor of the Eacle Staff Because of the changes at the College of Eastern Utah in the past two years the appointment ofJay Andrus as the new dean of students should be of vital interest to the student body As dean of students Andrus is responsible for all areas of class student life except schedules admission policies and registration His responsibilities student include housing service food government financial aid counseling and development plus the addition of the cheerleaders Debs and the dance program which has been from the transferred to him athletic department "Saying this job will be a challenge sounds trite but at the an is it time same said Andrus understatement" his of speaking appointment He expressed his excitement with all the new directions the college is taking Among the ones that will most directly affect students is the creation of an honor dorm for students who have a grade point average of 3i or higher To do this the school personnel are remodeling and renaming East Dorms Renaming of other buildings on campus is also under consideration by school administrators The plans to remodel the Student Activity Center are currently underway Andrus said the lounge will be more than just a TV room It will be somewhere that students can come and relax or use as a meeting place The rest of the remodelling in SAC will be finshcd as funds allow The college has also begun plans to relocate some of the college's departments to the old hospital that is being remodeled into a computer science and business building This move more space and would free would relieve the overcrowded is the classrooms college currently experiencing Besides the revitalization of many of CEU's buildings the college has added or will add over eight full time or part time positions These include two English positions a technical theatre director three new coaches over football basketball and women's sports a drill team advisor and a dance instructor Jay Andrua Besides these teaching positions CEU has added three new faces to its administration in the past two years including a new president academic vice president and athletic director The college has completely reorganized its departments In the reorganization the athletic department was moved from under the jurisdiction of the dean of students and placed directly under the president Andrus was pleased with the change and although he will no longer be over athletics he is looking forward to working closely with Bob Taniguchi “ Curly and I are good friends" Andrus said Andrus is excited about working with President Petersen and feels that he Will continue to be a very progressive president He feels that Petersen's new and positive ideas will attract more students to the college and more retain them by importantly reasons them to stay at giving CEU As dean of students Andrus hopes to establish an "Open Door" policy that would allow any student having problems access to his help at any time He hopes to do this by having posted office hours and spending one or two days a week walking around campus getting to know the students Andrus feels that by doing this he would be able to better serve the needs of the students and understand how they feel about campus student life Andrus feels that it is important that the students know who he is where he can be found and what he can do for them He said that at the larger universities and colleges it is difficult for the majority of the students to have any contact with the dean of students "One of the advantages" Andrus said "Of having a smaller campus is the availibilty of students to have direct contact with the 'administration and faculty We want all students to have a quality social and educational experiences here at CEU" Many students see the dean of students has a disipl inary position at the college Andrus said He explained that
