If you felt a little shaky last week, dont worry, the culprit was two earthquakes which rocked the area. The first one, Wednesday morning occurred three miles south ofManti, at 6:11 a.m., measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale. The second quake was at 8:31 a.m., with its epicenter a mile and a half south of Manti, measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale. Both, according to Ted Olson, of Snow College, occurred on the normal faults which bend under .the valley floor. He said the quakes were four or five kilometers below the earths surface a relatively shallow distance for earthquakes. Olsen said that many residents mistook the second quake for a -- sonic boom. Olson said the quakes are part of a relatively routine series felt occasionally in the area. I guess its all part of living in earthquake country, he concluded. Four home school reauests were approved, and the quality of education being received in the home schools was discussed by the Board. Doug Bates. Principal Ivan Rowley reported that enrollment at Richfield High was 658 students. He anticipates that the enrollment will peak at 750 students. He suggested that staffing remain the same, with 26 full time employees, three part time, and one Youth in Custody employee. Rowley noted that two foreign languages are being taught. Advanced Placement English is being taught and broadcast on KUED. He suggested using TV for student training in other subjects. Rowley reported that the ath- letics after school program has worked well, but it is restrictive to He said the the girls program. Trimester program is going well, and that the majority of students support the plan. The school plans to continue with the Trimester schedule next year. Sam Ware reported that the Burrville property was advertised for sale, and no bids were received. He said Sevier County is considering vacating a county road in Burrville. If the road is vacated, it will cause the property owned by Sevier School district to be land locked. Superintendent John Tuft updated legislative action. He said there appears to be a trend toward greater state control. He said these changes at the stale level cause more paper work and Increased work level of personnel in school districts. He said the weighted pupil unit will be funded next year at the same level as this year. With increased student numbers, class load will be slightly increased. He said the state is mandating a one percent additional refund this year due to a shortfall in state revenue. It was suggested that reduction of the school year be considered so these funds could be returned to the state. The possiblity of changing textbook rotation from five years to six years was discussed. There was considerable discussion of activity travel and possible cutbacks in this area. The recent bomb threat at Richfield High was discussed. A motion was approved stating that the Sevier School District Board of Education opposes attacks, alter cations or assaults that include threats toward teachers, administrators, or any employee of the District, and authorizes the Districts attorney, Ken Chamberlain, to prepare a statement in legal terms and format that will be published. The next meeting of the Board will be March 26, at 8 a.m. in Pahvant Elementary School. Those with questions or problems invitea to attend. Last week's bad weather slowed them down a little, but they are finishing the job this week on input from participants and discussions will be based on actual information from North Sevier. During the final session, the group will develop an Economic Development Plan of Action for North Sevier.
