The protest Wednesday followed a 220-mile relay run from Baker, Nev., to deliver bundles of letters to congressional and state leaders. Marty Meehan, D-Mass., has more money in his campaign war chest than any other House incumbent or candidate. Meehan, his account now primming with $4.78 million, climbed over a few other leaders during the election cycle of 200204, when he revved up his fundraising machine to be in position for a Senate race if John Kerry became president. Meehan easily won re-election last year. His closest trailing colleague, who holds $700,000 less than Meehan in his account, is Rep. Robert Menendez, D-N.J. Rep. Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat and potential Senate opponent to Meehan in 2008, is ranked No. 4 on the campaign contribution list with $2.3 million less than Meehan. With Meehan still vigorously raising money, some observers are asking why a lawmaker who fought years to reform campaign J/in Live iSnteH-amment This Week: ',-••].' Detected WNV activity for this past week includes: •Salt Lake County - one mosquito pool •Utah County - four mosquito pools •Duchesne County - one mosquito pool, two sentinel chickens and one dead bird •Uintah County - one dead bird and two sentinel chickens No human WNV cases have been found in Utah so far this year. "Our experience with WNV in past years indicates that once established, it can spread rapidly," says Dr. Robert Rolfs, state epidemiologist, Utah Department of Health (UDOH). "We recommend that all Utahns take the simple steps to protect themselves from the virus." Preventing mosquito bites is the best way to avoid getting WNV. Utahns can protect them- selves from mosquito bites by: •Using mosquito repellents that contain DEET or Picaridin (especially from dusk to dawn). •Wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants while outdpors. •Getting rid of standing water; this is where mosquitoes may live. Most people who are infected with WNV do not show any symptoms. About one in every five has flu-like symptorhs with fever, muscle aches, and possibly a rash. While those individuals recover, the illness can be prolonged. About one in 150 develop more severe illness affecting the brain and spinal cord. They may have headache, paralysis and stiff neck, and may suffer long-lasting or permanent disability. The risk of severe illness increases with age, but there is no age group that isn't at risk of illness. Staff from the Utah Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture and Food, along with local health departments, local mosquito abatement districts, and the Division of Wildlife Resources are all collaborating to track and monitor WNV in Utah. Since March 2005, local mosquito abatement districts have been using all their resources to reduce the number of mosquitoes that can spread the disease. They will continue these efforts throughout the 2005 mosquito season. For more information, call your local health department or the Health Resource Line at 1888-222-2542. "Just because you're a' reformer, doesn't mean the rules by which you play 'are different from your colleagues," Nyhart said. "The law is the same and the pressure is the same for all of them." Meehan has vastly more in his account than Shays or the Senate sponsors of the campaign-reform legislation, John McCain, RAriz., and Russell Feingold, DWis. McCain has the most of the three with a balance of $1.18 million. Meehan, in a statement, said, "I am deeply appreciative of the support I've received in the Merrimack Valley, from volunteers on my campaigns to people holding signs on Election Day." Meehan doesn't accept contributions from political action committees, which have higher donation limits than individuals. That prevents him from owing favors West Nile virus detected earlier in Utah 1 L: finance would build "an incumbency-protection plan" that, some say, blocks fair and robust elections. Campaign-finance reform, says David King, assistant director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, "is about creating an environment in which quality challengers will step to the plate." "If the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act was intended to make it easier for quality opponents to run for office, Marty Meehan's actions are certainly making it harder for someone to run against him. But he's not violating any law, he's just taking incumbency protection to the extreme." Meehan and Christopher Shays, R-Conn., led a years-long battle in the House to pass the landmark campaign-reform act in 2002. The sweeping law limits the contributions a candidate can receive, ostensibly leveling the playing field and . reducing the influence of special interest groups.
