Max Everyone else, it seems, is writing a column, or has ambitions to write a column, so why should we be exceptions? There's an invitation going on, dear readers. The foreign element has crept into the very bones of our loved ones. It brazenly flounts itself in our homes and our night clubs. It thrives in our colleges and swings out hotly and sweetly from all the best radio stations. We are speaking of the chief reason for the thirst for foreign languages brought about by a little ditty nationally mispronounced, the real spelling of which is "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" Whether or not you may like it makes little difference, really, because it is being tossed about that the ditty has sold more copies than any song since, "Yes, We Have No Bananas" not excepting "The Music Goes 'Round and 'Round." Personally we don't care what you think, we're nuts about the thing. One of the most redeeming features of the Acorn Ball will be the return of our beloved alumnus, one Howard "Swing" Williams, who, with all his little horn blowers and piano pounders and hot cow hide beaters, will honor all us dance lovers with his interpretation of "Bennie Goodman" swing and perchance a goodly portion of "chamber music." One Will Reign Supreme at the Acorn Ball Tonight Wildcats Show Metal In Golden Gl oves Tourney Darrell Peterson, Weber college slugger, smashed his way to two technical K.O.'s in the first two days of competition in the Ogden Standard-Examiner Golden Gloves tournament and at the time of this writing was favored to make the finals. George Johnson, Weber's colored flash, demonstrated some clean cut fighting to decision Shirl Robinson of Logan. George had to withdraw from the tournament because of injuries to his hands. Cy Stranger at 126 pounds took too many of Paul Lane's rights to the face, went down for a technical K.O. in the second stanza. Lane was runner-up in this class last year. Weber boxers were outfitted in splendid new royal purple satin trunks. Deadline For Yearbook Pictures February Fourth The deadline for the taking of class pictures for the Weber College annual, the Acorn, wa3 extended to February 4, because of the failure of the students tocooperate. Loft to right, top: Dorothy Dixon Bernice Criddle. Bottom: Jo Stone, Jane Nickson, Babs Clark and Helen Abbot Weber Musetts Reorganized Anticipating a full season of activity, the Weber Musetts, eighteen attractive girls, reorganized with Rose Burchell and Celinda Davidson as officers and Roland Parry as director. Plans for a tailored uniform of blue and white and a selection of pins were discussed at the last meeting. Director Parry has selected a varied and useful reportoire for the group. With such well-known voices as those of Bernice Criddle, Rose Burchell, Celinda Davidson, Ha Wright, Elaine Jones, Thelma Eskelson, the organization has already received numerous calls from the Ogden public. Director Parry says, "We have a group of exceptional voices, and we expect to have scuue really beautiful numbers worked up for public appearance soon." Defending Champions Wilt Under Wildcat Onslought Ricks Junior College, defending champions of an intermountain J. C. basketball league fell before the powerful bombardment of the Weber Wildcat machine last Friday and Saturday. Before game time the two teams were considered about par. Ricks had defeated Dixie College of St. George 57-49 and 62-41 and Weber had defeated Dixie 67-42 and 62-52. If any odds were given it seemed they should go on the Rex-burg men. All predictions for a close game were shattered the first night. After the game started the Wildcats took matters in their own hands and seemed to be able to score at will. The Vikings hit everything within 10 feet of the hoop but just couldn't make their shots count. The Wildcats whipped the Ricks Vikings 46-14 and 52-23 in a two night series here January 21 and 22. In the nrst encounter, the We-berites were never threatened by the Idahoans. (continued on page four) Queen of Weber To Be Announced During Intermission Who will be queen of the Acorn Ball will be the question tonight when this annual dance, sponsored by the yearbook staff, is held in the Weber College Ballroom. It is a semi-formal affair. The thirteen-piece orchestra of Howard "Swing" Williams will return to Weber for the first time since May of the last school year, to play at the Acorn Ball. From a group of six lovely coeds the queen of the Weber student body will be chosen: Helen Abbott, Babs Uark, Bernice Criddle, Dorothy Dixon, Jane Nickson, and Josephine Stone are the six girls who were chosen by the students Monday, January 17, from an original group of eleven. The final ballot for queen will be held the Friday of the dance during the nine o'clock classes. Then, at the dance the queen will be presented. The queen of the Acorn Ball is the only queen chosen by the students of Weber during this school year. She is the queen of the campus, the sweetheart of all. Sophomores will easily remember the music of Howard Williams and his "Swing" Band, which played at the student body dances last year. At the Acorn Ball "Swing" returns to play for the students as they were played for last year. Don't forget that the Acorn Ball will be held tonight in the Weber College Ballroom. The time: 9 p. m. The price is 75c a couple. It is semi-formal. |
