Show Friday Nov Page 16 Sports Shorts 1 1974 Ex-Aggi- es Lead Lions Each week at the Student Life Girls Basketball sports desk we receive several pieces of mail from various college teams But one team keeps us on top of the pro football scene — the Detroit Lions There will be a meeting for all girls interested in playing intercollegiate basketball Monday at 3:30 in room 116 of HPER If there are further questions The Lions are a special team to boosters as much of their offense is generated by two former Aggies running back Altie Taylor and QB Bill Munson please check with Fern Gardner in the Intramural Office (HPER old Aggie 126) Soccer Taylor who played at USU in the 1967-6- 8 seasons is second on the Lions in rushing and Munson who spent his time here in 1961-- 3 is leading the club in passing after getting his first regular starting call since joining ths Lions He received the game ball for the Lions recent victory over The USU soccer team packs it’s bags this weekend traveling to Laramie Wyoming to meet the University of Wyoming Cowboys Still high from their 0 shutout of Colorado St last weekend the Aggie kickers will be trying to 'Hieep their regular season record unblemished with a win over the Cowboys 3-- Minnesota The Ouch an Aggie receiver nocks heads with two West Texas defenders in last week s fray tomorrow team hopes for more of the fourth quarter heroics as they meet Idaho ! Field Hockey The Utah State University Field Hockey team has a big weekend ahead of them when they travel to Greeley Colorado to take part in the Intermountain Field Hockey Tournament The'tournament which begins on Friday and continues through Saturday will be the single most important event of the year for the team With ten teams in their division they could play as many as five games They go into the tournament after a mediocre weekend They lost to BYU 1 and tied the University of Utah 0 4-- rood Vondols on loot to hope Aggies that led to the A'gs second Touch- Dough McCulloch Sports Staff down Last year after six games the Aggies were riding a 1 record and things looked good But then the team met a powerful Kent State team and went 3 to finish for the season 5-- 2-- 7-- 4 0-- Well last week the Aggies played their sixth game of the year and now sit on a 1 record Womens Volleyball 5-- The USU Women’s Volleyball team will be flying south for the weekend as they play five games in a span of two days Friday they play in Tucson Arizona against the University of Arizona and the University of New Mexico Then on Saturday they travel to Tempe and face three teams The Univ of Northern Arizona New Mexico State Univ and Arizona State Last Saturday they lost to Ricks College 15-- 6 and 2 The JV volleyballers also met with hard luck last week as they were defeated by both BYU 5 and Snow College (12-1- 5 The week was not a total loss however as they defeated the 4 College of Eastern Utah and 15-- 0 This weekend the JV will host two teams Southern Colorado State College will face the Aggies Fricay at 6:00 pm in the HPEP On Saturday Snow building College will play at noon also in 14-1- (5-1- 14-1- 5) 6) 16-1- But this weekend the Ags hope to keep their winning ways when they meet the University of Idaho Vandals Saturday in Moscow (Idaho) Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm MDT and will be broadcast over KBLW Radio beginning at 1:10 The Aggies are fresh from their win against West Texas State after trailing the Buffaloes at the half In no game this year have the Aggies held the lead at the midway point The turning point in last week’s game was in the fourth quarter when fullback Jerry Cox broke loose for three yards on fourth down to sustain an 80 yard drive Saturday will mark the third consecutive game the Aggies have faced a team with a running attack The Vandals run their offense off the Houston veer with backs JC Chadband and Mark Fredback carrying the load Chadband has carried the ball 110 times for 572 yards and 5 TDs while Fredback has been good for 418 yards in 80 carries and one TD Both backs are coming off two consecutive 100 yard ballgames and average 52 yards a carry So far this year Idaho has gone with two quarterbacks Dave Comstock and Dennis Ballock Ballock has been seeing most the action as of late and is expected to start against the Aggies had a little trouble all together so far it putting this year falling behind with a recorcTwith their only victory coming at the hands of Idaho State and a tie with Montana The Idaho’s - primarily a running ball club But with Comstock they have the potential to go to the air when the need arises Comstock’s primary receiver is split end Tim Coles who has 15 receptions thus far Wide receiver Collie Mack has a 74 yard touchdown pass to his credit in the win against ISU The only common opponent the two teams have had this year was West Texas State who the Aggies 6 WTS defeated last week downed the Vandals three weeks ago 6 when the Buffaloes ran for over 500 yards This weekend marks the 24th time these two teams have met on the gridiron with Idaho with two holding a slim edge 1 in most The ties games ending recent meetings were in 1972 in Logan when Tony Adams passed the Aggies to a 51-- 7 win and in 1971 when the Aggies took the The Vandals in Moscow last Idaho victory was in 1970 when they spoiled the Aggies homecoming coming out ahead 42-1- 4 -
