ASWC Budget Revised An criticism of budget categories and amounts was stopped at the suggestion of Kristen Preston, guest UIA representative, on November 6 at the third meeting of the Legislative Assembly to item-by-ite- m consider this years ASWC budget. At Prestons suggestion, Assembly members and guests spent the last half hour of their two-homeeting first , identifying items already spent or committed (in fact and principle) and, second , prioritizing and revising the balance of requests on the basis of their potential benefits to students and ur academics. After priorities were assigned, Preston suggested that the Assembly pass the ASWC Executive Officers proposal with the following changes: That they decrease proposed amounts for the Ski Club by $400, the Golf Club by $100, and ASPA by $100 and increase the proposed Ellipsis budget by $600. Executive officers left the meeting to discuss the proposed revisions and returned with a counter proposal: To decrease amounts proposed for the Ski Club by $300, the Golf Club by $100, and ASPA by $100 and to increase the Ellipsis by $450 and the General Fund by $50. The Assembly adjourned its hearing as a Committee of the Whole, where both members and guests had participated in discussion, and members only voted on the final budget proposal. The final proposal was approved by a vote of 6 in favor and 1 opposed. The opposing vote was cast for Sabrina Morton, Nursing Representative, by proxy held by Sue Snow. The main issue addressed by Mortons proxy, but not discussed in the budget hearing, was the matter of "supenSTpaidto' AsW!aSineMnem!rs! Morton, contacted after the meeting, said, The issue of stipends should have been addressed a long time ago. I dont know how the figures were arrived at, and I dont think its ever been questioned. Morton said ASWC officers are in elected positions, positions they ran for to do jobs they wanted to do. She said she felt the stipends were too high and wanted to know what justifies their being paid so much. Students disappointed in Forum. The first hour and a half of the budget hearing was spent on discussions of the merits of various organizations requesting budget funds. All three student publications were discussed in detail, and the Forum was the subject of lively discussion. Kelly Morrison, Student Representative on the Board of Governance for Publications, attended the start of the meeting specifically to register student dissatisfaction with the Forum. Morrison said, Everyone I have spoken to is dissatisfied. He said the newspaper is passive . . . and there is no correspondence between students and the paper anymore. Morrison said that students felt their opinions had been banned to the Opinion Board. He said the Forums editorial policy was no longer clear to students and that it should appear in the staff box in every issue of the newspaper. Past issues of the Ellipsis and the Etosian were also subjects for criticism. Jon Butler, Associate Justice, said he didnt think they should pay that kind of money for garbage, referring specifically to last years yearbook. Leslie Helm, Ellipsis editor, said that cutting the Ellipsis budget would only limit the staff s ability to CLASSIFIEDS: With Zebby only Full First fill set of acrylics with tips $35.00. and repair is FREE $20.00 value.
