Chapter V COOKIE, one of Camptau's hench-men, hench-men, hurried down the aisle of the coach occupied by the gambler nd his crew. As Cookie reached Campeau's seat, he whispered ex Mtedly to the gambler. "The new trouble shooter Is look-,n' look-,n' for you, Mr. Cam peau." "For what?" Campeau asked. "Dunno but he's headed this way. He'll be here soon." "Keep an eye on him," Campeau ordered. As Cookie hurried away, Campeau called Brett and Cordray, two of his gunmen. gun-men. "Sit down and keep your eyes open," Campeau said as the two arrived at his seat "Dick, come here," Campeau called to his partner. Mollie entered as Brett and Cordray were settling themselves them-selves in the seat behind Campeau and loosening the guns in their holsters. The girl turned to Dick. "Why. what's goin' on here?" she demanded, noting the warlike war-like preparations. "Sit down, Mollie, and keep low," Dick urged as he pushed her gently into a Beat. "Cam-peau's "Cam-peau's expecting company." Dick joined Campeau and seated himself him-self with his back to the door. As Jeff Butler entered, Cookie scurried back to Campeau. "That's him. boss." he whispered. Leaving Leach and Fiesta at the door, Jen strolled through the car. He halted as he reached Campeau's seat and the two men eyed each other oth-er la silence. Dick Allen glanced np and his face lighted with surprised recognition. "Jeff Butler!" he yelled as he leaped to his feet and grabbed Jeff in a bear hug. "Dick!" Jeff was equally startled and pleased. The two stepped back and examined each other. "You old dog catcher," Dick said affectionately. "Ton old chicken thief," Jeff grinned as they pounded each other on the back. Campeau, Brett and Cordrav were frankly nuzzled bv this unemected turn of events. Mollie, too, was curi ous as she watchea the two men. "Remember the last time I saw you in Philadelphia?" Dick laughed. Jeff shook his head. "It was Baltimore, Bal-timore, Dick." "Now. wait," Dick countered. "We started celebrating our discharge from the army in New York. We came up for air in Philadelphia" "And I put you to bed in Baltimore," Balti-more," Jeff finished. "And I woke up name for trouble shooter, eh?" Silence settled over the group for a moment. Dick eyed Jeff in surprise. sur-prise. Campeau studied him insolently. inso-lently. "Maybe," Jeff broke the silence.- "Looks like we'd see Quite a lot of each other," Campeau suggested and added, "for a while." "I was figuring on having a little talk with you," Jeff said quietly to Campeau. "Any time," the gambler agreed. "Maybe you'd better have a little talk with your friend here first." Jeff nodded as Dick seized his arm and led him to the seat where Mollie was sitting. "This is my seat and this Is Miss Mollie Monahan Mon-ahan Jeff Butler," Dick said. "Jeff and I fit. bled and died together to-gether during the war," he explained ex-plained to Mollie. "That's a crazy way for two' friends to say hello," Dick laughed. Dick cut In hastily.
