can isee see lights on oil in many homes where the women are cooking breakfast land and making lunches tor for several linen men who are going hunting deer there is something about a crowd of men putting away a large breakfast and discussing the current hunt and incidents of past hunts that makes a woman feel good but after the men have gone the table and cabinets cluttered with dirty dishes dont look so good speaking of deer hunts we have all heard stories about men hunters or even some about lady hunters but it may be of interest to hear how six women who dont hunt went on deer hunts with their husbands a few years ago charles had hunted deer for or years and years but it had never occurred to me or any of my friends around here to go the women talked me into going were all from salt lake and we had bad been friends for a long time they had been going on camping trips with their husbands and families for years they had the knack of camping down to a science we had bad a regular caravan with me riding in the big truck with the other heavy stuff baled hay tents saddles saddies and stoves several of the men rid had gone early to ride the horses up tip to camp we went over some awful roads and sometimes each car had to be helped up tip a hill but none of us were nervous about the roads when the camp was all set up it looked like a small tonn ton the tents being lined on oil each aide of center street georges tent was set up a little apart irom from the others on account of his snoring tile the tent literally shook when he snored which was about all night but Al marguerite arguerite never minded because after 25 years she was used to it A salt lake woman had a bed spread on her bed and a nice mat on the dirt floor some ate in a big dining and cook tent complete with easy chairs etc we used to gather in this tent in the evenings to sing and visit our lights were either electric ones front from wires attached to the truck or gas lanterns the street in front of the tents was raked or swept with an old broom arid and sticks were set act in the ground to hold tile the wash basins last but not least the collapsible outdoor plumbing unit or contraption trap tion affectionately called the throne was set up complete with all the parts and white flag to be raised when occupied wood was gathered and everything made ready for the first day of the hunt all the perishable food had bad been placed in largo covered kettles and put in the creek at am the whole camp was up arid and ready to go there were usually five or six men in camp without their wives so they took heir meals with other members of the party at first wo we asked each man what he wanted in ills his lunch and they would be put up accordingly his name was written on the paper sack but due to any number of lot things no one ever got ills his own lunch so thereafter we just handed each hunter a lunch in a day or two there were sev pral fral deer hung up and what a sight bight they were all in fit white muslin ii bags with drawstrings draw strings around their necks and just their heads ticking out there was always one deer hanging there without ills his sack and that one was ours tiles flies or no tiles flies while the men hunted we did our work visited read and hiked each of the six years we went marguerite mended from twenty to thirty pairs of sox box each day one of the ladies invited the rest to lunch when the wea weather her was nice I 1 we ate outside the tables were set with nice cloths claths and each lady went ent to great lengths to make salads etc marguerite who had spent ten years in tahiti when her huab husband and george was mission pres president ident told many of their experiences exper fen ces there marguerite and george also had their wedding anniversary dinner in ill camp we always h had ad a good hot hoi dinner ready for the men when they came back in ill the evening this was greatly ampre appreciated elated by the men who heretofore had opened a can of cold food rather than go to the bother of cooking some we been hunting with the men for a number of years but we will never forget all of pleasant times we had there were people in the gang of different faiths and ideas but all of us were true and loving friends george lias has gone to his bis reward but the pleasant memories we have of the deer hunts will stay with us always |
