After the hearing, Johnson said Lafferty told him he was "moved upon" not to say anything in the hearing - and Lafferty told Bullock several times, "I have no comment, your honor," as the judge asked about his intentions to conduct his own defense. With the change of venue denied, jury selection began Thursday, and lasted days as over 80 prospective jurors were asked how much they knew about the case, and if they thought they could forget previous opinions about Lafferty's guilt, and judge the case on the basis of the evidence. Among the jurors disqualified were two members of Lafferty's former LDS ward in Highland, Utah, where he served as a second counselor in a bishopric. By Saturday afternoon, 40 jurors had. been qualified, and Monday morning the numbers were pared down to 14 - 12 jurors and two alternates. "Evidence will show you that she was not around to enjoy her birthday, having been brutally murdered by this defendant and his brother." He said Lafferty's motives for the murders, and for conspiring to kill Mrs. Low and Stowe was because they gave comfort to Lafferty's wife during what Watson called "a very bitter divorce proceedings." said journal entries would where Lafferty wrote, "Richard Stowe is my enemy."
