Show THANK YOU FOR OUR MERRY CHRISTMAS note the following letter was received on dec 1 it is such an unusual letter I 1 requested the writers permission to use it in this column I 1 accept it as a 1 I tribute not to me personally but to tile the employers of people everywhere mr green has been on oil tile the staff at harding college for three years george S benson president of harding 0 college dear mr fr benson 1 I your memorandum announcing that the staff staff of harding college would have wednesday thursday friday and saturday or of L christmas week off with pay to spend at home with our families started a I 1 train of thought in my mind and led to the impulse compelling me to write this letter ive never before written such a letter however I 1 should have written something like it to every employer for whom ive worked what I 1 want to say is this im grateful to you for creating the job I 1 hold im realizing rea lising for the first time how important the people who create jobs are to tile the people who need them and almost everybody needs a job for the first time im realizing that im like millions of other people who work for wages or salaries were not job mak makers we ve have abilities or capabilities or talents but the actual cr creation of a job pays a daily weekly or monthly pay check is something none of us has been able to accomplish my own natural inclination when I 1 got out of school was toward self employment so I 1 tried running a business of my own I 1 make the grade apparently I 1 lacked the something or other that makes the successful business man tick perhaps I 1 could have survived had I 1 gone to the land and farmed but I 1 knew even less about farming than how to create a permanent paying job I 1 was obliged to become an employee on a job someone else had created had not a job been available frankly I 1 do not know what I 1 would have done grim necessity might have made a difference As it was I 1 needed only to adjust myself to the requirements of a job that almost any able bodied man could have held it provided the necessities of life and some of the pleasures later I 1 again tried operating my own business this time with three employees and a pretty good opportunity for success I 1 simply have what it took tile the business failed I 1 became an employee again on a job somebody else created eventually the job satisfy me so I 1 began studying for a profession when I 1 attained it I 1 found myself alas dependent upon someone i to create the position and provide the salary where you come in the job I 1 hold and most of tile the nearly other jobs at harding did not exist when you became the chief executive officer youve made a success of harding college built it up expanded its educational work into many fields youve created lots of jobs good permanent satisfying 0 positions for persons like me in writing you this letter of gratitude I 1 am also recognizing in a sense the social value of job makers throughout the nation men like sloan and wilson at general motors where jobs have been created since I 1 was a sophomore in high school men like holmes of swift company levitt the mass production home builder le the earth mover the pharmaceutical lillys of indianapolis the corner conier drug store stoke owner the department store head and so on they are the job makers there are one or two to be found wherever people work with their unusual enterprise and industry their perseverance and their courage they make jobs for the rest of us where would world we be without them well one thing is certain we be as well off as we are this a bowing and scraping letter dr benson im on your staff because im making a contribution to the success of harding college yet I 1 know im not indispensable to you or the success of the college and today for the first time I 1 have realized how truly indispensable are the people who build and produce and organize and make jobs for millions of others thank you for our merry christmas sincerely glenn A green |
