Barben of West Jordan, will be the guest speaker at the Special Interest fireside to be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the Tooele Stake Center, 253 South 2nd East. Brother Barben has spent a lifetime of service to the LDS Church. He served as a Counselor tion of Rev. John Metzig. Because there is no longer a iHElnsf No matter what they say RTZ stie knows he s THE LAST DRAGON the Bishopric, Bishop, Stake President, Mission President to the Alaska Anchorage Mission, and has also served on the Gener- the Cambodians the children orphaned, indoctrinated and brutalized. I sympathized with the journalist who was trying to get the truth about Cambodia to the world, trying to get people to do something about it, and I understood his frustration and anger over the hopelessness of it all. I feel the same empathy with those who are trying to do something about child abuse, drug addic- tion, cancer, crime and nuclear war. There are many such crusades manned by people who are asking for help, trying to reach us or the government or the business world. Each has his own pet project, and each is asking, "Why? Why isnt there more response? Why isnt everyone involved in righting this wrong? Why cant they see how important this is? I am sure you know what talking about. While I was watching Im Cam- bodian children being bombed and maimed, I thought about Ray. Ray is my crusade. Although Tuesday was my first meeting with Ray, I recognized him immediately. He is 22 years old. The loves of his life are hunting and fishing, hiking in the mountains, or driving his 65 Mustang. Ray dreams about going back to college. He likes computer science and wants to become a system analyst eventually. But "eventually is an iffy word for him! Ray has Cystic Fibrosis and he knows that as yet, there is no cure for the disease that has ravished and wasted his body. At 22 he is 54 tall, and he weights in at 95 pounds. Cystic Fibrosis is a vicious killer. I know because it killed our son. Just when life should have been starting for him, it ended. He was 28 - old for a CF victim. Ray remembers Bill Ray. They shared a game or two of checkers over their mist machines. Right now Ray is "in. Thats CF jargon for "in the hospital, a regular part of the progression of the disease. Most of the days of a CF victim, in or out of the hospital, are spent in fighting the thick mucous which clogs the vital air passages and lungs. r C -- means being hooked into pure oxygen. The only thing that is beautiful about CF is the spirit of the victims it has locked in its grasp. Ray is upbeat, cheerful and fun loving the kind of kid you feel good around. Somehow he has managed to fill a mission for his church and get in some schooling at Ricks. But I am crusading for more than this for Ray: I want Ray to have a better tomorrow. I want him to have the breath to be able to hike in those mountains, to be able to climb a flight of stairs without struggling, to be able to sleep without coughing. I want Ray to be confident that he has plenty of time for living and dreaming and doing, just as I want freedom for the Cambodians, healing for abused children, straight limbs and healthy bodies for kids with birth defects, life for cancer victims and freedom from pain for arthritis sufferers. My message today (put in whatever vernacular you want) is that -- Jewish, Christian, Mohammedan, or Atheist, you are your brothers keeper and you should give to Your Heart Association, to the March of Dimes, the Penny Parade, the American Cancer Drive, Multiple Sclerosis or Muscular Dystrophy.
