Show September 21, 2000 Remembering dream messages important There you are in blissful utopia, secreted in slumber, unbound by the dregs of daily existence. Just when you thought you were getting time, offfrom work, you were wrong. Thanks to rapid eye movement you are just as busy asleep as you are awake. But what exactly is going on while you are unconscious and how can you get more from your snore? Todd Northrop, an intern at a family counseling service as a licensed professional, took 24 nocturnal adventurers on a journey into the subliminal structure of dreams to understand the sublime messages their subconscious are sending. He shared his experiences this past Tuesday and will do so again next Tuesday night at 7:30 in the Family Sup- port Center. Stimuli bombards the brain and nervous system all day long. Dreaming often is the brain losing cognitive information, Northrop said, explaining there are four phases of dreaming while a person is asleep REM is the most intense but not the only place a person dreams. There is some healing going on there, Northrop said. A nightmare happens when there is so much repressed emotion it is screaming to be heard, E, Individuals who qualify for the program include: Northrop said. People, he explained, will alienate or ignore an aspect of themselves to fit the mold of the character they want to be. In other words, behave in a way that will please others or reinforce the image they want to convey. Dreams wont tell you anything you cant handle, Northrop said, explaining that dreams usually start off intense and then become neutral, which is why it is often difficult to remember a dream. Recalling a dream can be an important step in understanding how you are reacting to your surroundings and the events going on in your life. Dreams provide the ground work for self improvement in your relationships, work and self understanding, Northrop said.
