The record of the Tribune does not place it in an enviable light on the question of loyalty, either to the Republican party, which some have foolishly believed it represented, or to the state, which has given the Tribunes owner his great wealth. The Tribune has loudly proclaimed the necessity for standing pat on party lines, while at the same time its managers were secretly preparing to desert the cause it was pretending to fact that champion. It is a for months past the Tribunes owner was, in effect, saying to his staff: Stand by the party if .it will do as I say. Try soft soap, and if that fails, uso the lash. Then, if I cant rule, break away and give them h 11. What an example of loyalty is this for a man who has been elevated to the senate of the United States. He considers nothing but selfish ends. But among them all, the spectacle of the K. K. American party making Loyalty its shibboleth and battle cry is the most incongruous and ridiculous. Ever since the people of Utah divided on party lines, the best citizens of the state, including both Mormons and Gentiles, have urged loyalty to political convictions. And, in the main, there has been little cause for complaint. Some, persons have now and again gone to bed members of one party and arose in the morning to vote, with their enemies. Considerable interest is being taken in the events. It is said that a select few of the leaders of the party are making slates and that some of the candidates are slated to be sidetracked.'
