Show HILL TOP TIMES Page 4 HILL TOP TIMES coo Hope is Spirit of Veterans Day Veterans Day 1962 it's always a solemn event. This year it's more so because we've faced the worst national crisis since Korea and have not been found wanting. Never "have we been more united as Americans; never has a president's bold, sure action to meet a military threat had greater popular support. It's not over, of course. Far from it. Cuba even without Soviet missiles will be an ugly problem as long as Castro and his crew are around. The issues in Berlin remain unsolved. Agreements on a nuclear test ban and the larger problem of controlled disarmament have not been reached. In other words, it's no time for hosannas. And yet a feeling is widespread that the President's resolute stand on Cuba and Mr. Khrushchev's sensible backdown may have marked a turning point in the cold war. Had the Soviets persisted in their intransigence, who knows what the state of the world would be on this November 11? It is terrible to contemplate even now that reason has prevailed. As civilian and military members of the Defense Department, let's be proud that American military might and the President's grim determination to use it if necessary was the decisive factor. We are that might each and every one of us. In the eyes of the world we have proved ourselves not in war but as a deterrent to war We are keepers of the peace. Yes, perils lie ahead. We can expect other tests of American grit and fortitude. But the heartening fact that the Cuban issue has passed into the authority of the United Nations ; the demonstrations of solidarity by our NATO allies and the Organization of American States these are grounds for hope. And hope is the spirit that predominates this Veterans Day. V Wit Relieves Stress r How often have you heard it said of a man that "he's a character always making with the wisecracks even when things go badly" or words to that effect ? The implication seems to be that wit is reprehensible at certain times, and indeed it is. Nobody laughs at a funeral. The fact is, though, that the perennial "comedian" in a group say a military unit in combat or a detachn ment living under conditions of very often is a valuable functionary. This is currently being borne out by the field studies of an Air Force psychologist, Dr. Ewart E. Smith, who is researching the function of humor and the role of the wit in groups under stress. Let's not be too quick to deprecate the man who deliberately used his gift of quick thinking, coupled with a wryly humorous outlook on life, to sound off even when the going is grim. For, says Dr. Smith, he's the man who exhibits the characteristics generally associated with leadership. semi-isolatio- FOR THE PEOPLE OK DAVIS COUNTY EXAMPLES OF REPAYMENTS k Cash You Mon.
