Rhodes, student officer, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Rhodes of Brig-haCity, received his wings recently when he graduated from the Marfa, Texas AAF Pilot School, it was announced by Col. Donald B. Phillips, commanding officer. Mr. Rhode, completed a course in training in planes. He was assigned here from Gardner Field, California. He is a graduate of the Bear River high school. m twin-engi- CpL Thomas F. Larkin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Larkin, of Snowviile, was graduated this week from the AAF Training Command's Flexible Gunnery School near Fort Myers, Florida. Now Qualified as an aerial gunner, he will soon become a member of one of the Army Air Forces' bomber crews. He will receive his crew training at an operational training field in the United States then go overseas. Hundreds of gunners are graduated each week from the huge gunnery school near Foil Myers, where the shooting1 ranges from skeet with d a shotgun to firing from turrets in huge bombers over the Gulf of Mexico. Cpl. Larkin entered the Army 15 months ago, having been engaged in farming. He has completed the aircraft mechanic school at Sheppard Field, Texas. Cpl. Larkin is now spending a short furlough with his parents. CpL Glen Stumm spent a few days last weekend home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Park Stumm. Glen has been stationed on the desert in California. He reports that the visit, though short, was well worth the effort and discomfort it took to get here. ne Sailor Ferris II. Lawson has been visiting here with Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Christensen. He will go to Roosevelt to visit with his parents before returning to duty at Farragut, Idaho. Sergeant and Mrs. Melvin Hansen, of Elgin, Texas, are visiting in Bear River City with Mrs. Hansen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Wankier, and in Corinne with Sergeant Hansen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hansen, Sergeant Hansen h.as to fEport for duty on the night of January 18th for a new camp. Mrs. Hansen will remain in Bear River City. Word was received here recently that Leon Christensen, the former vegetable produce man, has arrived safely in England. He says he is well and happy and sends holiday "greetings. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Davis, of this valley, received word recently that their son, Lt Jesse Lawrence Davis was awarded the silver star medal for action in the Italian war area. He has served in Africa and Sicily before Italy. Lt, Davis reports that he has had many close calls, and that the Italian country is rapidly being devastated be yond recognition. He was honored along with several other boys, after having returned to camp with nearly a million dollars worth of equipment, which included about 18 tanks. The men spent a week under constant artillery fire and bombings. uid still managed to return the Deverl Hess, of Plymouth, is home on a furlough for a few days. Lt Ross Hadfield and wife returned to San Luis Obispo, mon-daafter spending ten days in Riverside with Lt Hadfield's parents, Mr. and Mis. J. O. Hadfield. y, A social was held in the Riverside chapel Wednesday evening for Gordan Moses, who has joined the Navy. He has been a student at the U. S. A. C. and has worked as a technician at KVNU and also as a radio operator for the U. S. Forestry Service, He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Moses. has just recently been transferred from Texas Cpl. Oleen Udy to Hamilton Field, California. His wile plans on joining him there. After spending a month fur- lough with his wife and family, Capt. Warren E. Johnson of Bear River City, that theih son, Melvin Keith Johnson has been promoted from Seaman second class to Sea man first class. Seaman Johnson has just completed liis four weeks radio training course at Wright Junior college and now is attending Texas A and M college. Seaman Johnson entered tho Navy in August, 1943, and took his boot training at Farragut, Idaho. Before entering the service he was an air plane instrument mechanic at Hill Field. He is a graduate of the Box Elder high school. Winzeler recently arrived at the Army Air Forces Classification Center at San An- tonio, Texas. During classification he will take physical examinations and testa which will determine whether he will become a bombardier, navigator or pilot. Winzeler has just completed four months training at the Oklahoma A and M college at Stillwater, Oklahoma as a member of the Army Air Forces 90th college training detachment. Mrs. Winz-lethe former Jennie Eldredge, has been in Oklahoma with him for the past three months and is now with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Eldredge at Rawleigh, Calif. Simmons, of Beaver Dam, left Saturday morning, January 15 for Farragut, Idaho, where he will be stationed during his basic naval training. LaMon was a graduate of Bear River high school last year. Kimber, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Kimber of Drawer Chest 4 21" Grouse Creek, returned home Sunday for a weeks stay from a school in North Dakota, where he has been taking radio training. Corporal Kimber has been serving in the U. S. Army for almost two years. He first trained in Texas with glider plains and had advanced to technical Sergeant when he was transferred to the radio commission. He sacrificed his stripes for the radio training but has again made his way up to the rank of corporal. He expects to be assigned a plane for oversea duty as soon as he returns to camp. Ffc. Rulon Borgstrom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alben Borgstrom of Thatcher, came home to spend his furlough last week. Pfc. Borgstrom has to report back to his camp on the 27th. Since he has been in the Army he has advanced to a Pfc, and won distinction in boxing and markmanship. This is his recruit leave, signifying that he has completed his boot training. Boyd will be home approximately 15 days, after which he will return to Farragut, Idaho for further orders. Pvt. Allen Sorensen, son of Mr, and Mrs. J. H. Sorensen of East Garland, was recently transferred to a gunnery school In Harlingen, Texas. Allen quite enjoys the thrills gets in plane flights. Lt, Willard R. Larson has been doing some liigh altitude flying, which took him over Washington, D. C. He landed at Bowling Field and had a pleasant overnight visit with relatives in the Nation's Capitol. Pvt. Ralph Holman and wife, of East Garland, left Saturday for a beauty to any room in your home!
