Kay iiurtenshaw. Instead of a thins of beautv. this plant is a menace to Utah ag riculture and should be dealt with Here's why. It is an sternly. agressive, fast growing, and early maturing perennial weed. It spreads by seeds as well as by underground rootstocks, and competes with crops for water, sun- ngnt and plant nutrients. A recent survey shows that white top is a problem in every county in the state. Some people claim it is impossible to control this weed. That is definitely false, the agent points out, and there are many examples of successful control throughout the state. White top can be controlled by persistent efforts, employing various proven methods such as: 1. Using soil serilants on small patches found along ditch banks, fence lines or roads, or 2. Spraying with 24D twice each year (once when in bloom and again in the fall rosette stage) Probably will require three or four years for complete 'control. 3. A combination of cropping, cultivation and chemicals on infested farm land. For example: Plow early in the spring. Apply 40 lbs available nitrogen per acre. Seed immediately to grain. Spray with 24D when the grain is between the stooling and booting stage. After the crop is harvested plow and cultivate or spray with 24D as fall growth appears. This program should be followed as long as is necessary. Probably three or four years for complete control. ine Mangelson, Irene Mangelson, Marva Shepherd, Codeal Brough, Alice Shepherd, Melba Ballow, Blanch Stephensen, Gwen StepCarrol CARD OF THANKS hensen, Helen Tedder, The family of Mrs. Alonzo InHansen, Louise Taylor, Ella Fae Beard, Enid Worwood, and the gram desire to extend thanks and appreciation to friends and relahostess, Mrs. Grant. tives for their kindnesses in our Warren Bendixen, who is at- behalf following the death of our tending school at the U S A C mother.
