Show protest comm committee ee girds to battle on rail uie lane cerbi curbing ag cities civic groups plan tactics for public hearing scheduled fe february 24 A peek at the books is what members of a three county protest committee will call for when they attend a february public hear hearing irig on the proposed stoppage of mail and passenger service to this area by the the denver and rio grande western railroad the D R G W has petitioned the utah public service commission for a cessation of the service on the marysvale Marys vale branch line between thistle utah county and marysvale Marys vale plute county A public hearing on the matter has been slated in richfield representatives of the protest ly 40 from 11 dif committee will ask that a public service commission accountant give sworn testimony at the hearing on financial operations of the railroad during the past two years committee members are also expected to ask the public service commission to subpoena a mail service representative to testify at the hearing decided at meeting the measures were decided upon at a general strategy meeting held by committee members in richfield tuesday night near ferent communities in the area attended the meeting included were mayors businessmen and club and civic organization leaders of the communities we would like a breakdown and accounting of parti particular cula i r expenses listed by the company under mail and freight service operations various members said at the meeting if it can be found that the services as a whole are paying we see no reason for the discontinuance ti nuance of service members at the meeting stated that they will present hardship c cases ases to the commission in an effort to block the railroads suspension plans it was suggested at the meeting in 9 that the railroad company might be trying to obtain a higher boost in mail service contracts than has been granted by the government and were utilizing public pressure in having their demands met want rail hall service inthey if they do need higher rates members said we will be on their side paramount to us howver however e is retention of the railroad service so we wont be cut off from the rest of utah letters will be sent to various representatives in state and national government asking for help in stopping the railroads move it was decided delegates were appointed to seek backing from outside industrial interests affected by the stoppage of rail facilities to the area support of various labor org animations will also be sought it was as recommended letters will be sent to postal employees railroad workers and other labor groups by the richfield chamber of commerce the meeting was conducted by bill warner executive secretary of the richfield chamber of commerce in the absence of homer bandley chamber president who was in salt lake city attending legislature hearings gives legal advice ferdinand erickson monroe lawyer and sixth district court attorney provided legal advice to the group attending the meeting were representatives from fairview mt pleasant ephraim Ephr alm mantl manti moroni gunnison salina richfield elsinore monroe and marysvale Marys vale delegates from the associated civic clubs of southern and eastern utah chambers of commerce junior chambers of commerce and lions club officials bials were present |
