Luke Martinez headed to Snow College Badgers Luke Martinez, a recent graduate of Monticello High School, is planning to play football for the Snow College Badgers beginning in August. Luke, who was named first for his efforts team with the Buckaroos, is seeking fundraising assistance to support his effort to play college to football. Boot Camp starts in two weeks, with the first game barely a month away. Lee will have all the same assistant coaches as in the past and is adding Ryan Nielson, the new Bronco basketball coach, and former player Chad Shumway to his staff. "We'll be competitive," he understates, "We'll be ok." Lee is planning on changing little this year, continuing a legendary offensive and defensive strategy that has produced 133 victories, seven state championship games, and three state championships in the past 16 years. Lee has been aboard for all of those, although he says that he didn't ever feel like an assiin Coach stant coach Burtenshaw's system. However, his perspective has changed over the last 20 years. "I don't base life on wins and losses anymore," he reasons. He hopes to be a positive influence on the boys in his program and help them to become good, participating members of society. "I see competition and rivalries as great life encounters and tremendous opportunities, growing opportunities. There is no pain for having competed," he knowingly says. He still has the energy for coaching. As one assistant said, "He could coach until he's 90!" Look for that feeling in the air soon. It's almost football time again! And look for the Broncos to be right in the thick of things, just like always. by Scott Boyle It is said that success at high school football is 10 percent physical and 80 percent mental. Coach Mike Bowring and the 2003 Monticello Buckaroo football team will be working on the mental and the physi- cal this weekend at their an- nual Unity Camp. According to Bowring the camp has three goals: 1. Build team unity; 2. Community service; 3. Football practice. The camp begins Thursday evening with check in and the first practice. Friday consists of a 7 AM practice session and four hours of community service in the afternoon. If you know of, or are in need of, some service, give Coach Bowring a That evening is the traditional Loyd's Lake Workout (LLW), where the players jog around Loyds Lake, finishing on the dam. Then it's to the bottom of the dam and running up the side - four times! Try that in your next workout. Evenings are spent with mo- tivational speakers, dinner, swimming and other team activities. Saturday morning brings another practice session until noon, when the camp ends. Bowring's philosophy rings loudly through all of this and in all he does, "I hope we give them more than they give us." The adult 30 and over dam run will begin right after I finish my box of donuts. Coming? call. Bayles Exploration wins another softball tourney The annual Blue Mountain Invitational Fastpitch Softball tournament was won by Bayles Exploration in dramatic fashion. Dedicating the tournament to sponsor and coach Randee Bayles, the team overcame a last inning loss to the Salt Lake Boys earlier in the tournament to come back late Sat- urday evening and beat the Boys twice. Bayles bats came alive in the last two games, pounding the Boys 10-- in the first game, and leading 12-- in the second game when the Boys called it quits. 3 0 Bayles was led by tournament MVP Travis Pachard and All Tourney pitcher Steve "Blackie" Black, who pitched four of the six games. Bayles Exploration has now won the annual tournament 10 to 15 times, although no official records exist. Local players on the Bayles team include Mike and Brent Bowers, Mike Bowring, and RT Nielson. "We decided that we would play in honor of Randy this year," said Nielson, who along with Bowring took over the coaching duties. Twelve teams entered the tournament, including teams from SLC, Utah Valley, Colorado, Vernal, Moab, Blanding, Monticello, and Bull Hollow. "We had good quality teams," praised tournament organizer Eddie Allred, "On Friday night, with the dance and talent show going, the atmosphere was fun!" Indeed, the Salt Lake Boys mentioned they had never played in front of such a huge, energetic crowd. The evening was topped off by one of the better fireworks displays in years.
