On Tuesday, Muslims celebrated the Islamic New Year with prayerandfasting. It is now the year 1427 A.H. (anno He- jira), measured from the time the prophet Mohammed emigrated from Mecca to Medina in Saudi Arabia to avoid persecution. The Hejira (emigration) took place in 622 A.D., and the months and years of the Islamic calendar are measured by the movements of the moon instead of the sun. On Thursday, Muslims will celebrate anotherholiday, called Ashura. It means “0th,” and it falls on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic year, butit has different meaningstodifferentsects of Islam. The two main Islamic sects are Sunni and Shiite, and Sunnis are the majority everywherebut in Iraq and Iran. For Shiites, Ashurais a day to remember the martyrdom of Husaynbin Ali, the grand- leading a rebellion against Yazid,a controversially appointed political and religious leader. Ghulam Hasnain, an executive council memberat the Alrasool Islamic Centerin Salt Lake City, said if it weren't for what happened thatfirst Ashura, there might not be such a thing as Shiite Islam. “The whole thing came to a head on that day,” Hasnain said. “The point of our proceedingsis to call attentionoer to transpired that day.” Hasnain said there will be speeches, prayersand other events at the Alrasool Islamic Centerinthe nine days leading up to Ashura, culminating with a daylong program Thursday. Shiites sing and perform plays to remember Husayn'smartyrdom, and sometimes thump their chests to express mourning. Ashurais such a defining holiday for Shiites, Hasnain said, noting that the congregation growsfrom 50, on a normal day, to about 150. “Every Shiite, no matter what shape or shade they maybe, comes out on Ashura,” Hasnain said. “That's how important it is.” Ashura for different reasons than Shiites. Baioumyis a Sunni Muslim, and he says he doesn’t know of any Shiites in Utah County. “The new year for us is more prayer,” Baioumysaid.“It’s the same celebration the Jewsused to do for the passover. We celebrate because God saved Moses from the pharaohs. Usually wefast during the ninth and 10th days of Muharram.” Hesaid the fasting is not obligatory, but Mohammed recommended they fast during those two days, so Baioumy usually does, Hesaid celebrating here in Utah is very different from celebrating in Egypt, wherehe is from. “There,if someone sees you eating during a day you are supposed to be fasting, they know you arebreaking the fast,” Baioumy said. “Here,if | eat during the fasting day, nobody knowsI'm supposed tobe fasting. So it's not done to show other people that you arefasting.” For both sects, Muharram is a sacred month during which there should be no fighting or aggression. “We're asked to cease fire andjust stop,” said Ahmad Salah, a Brigham Young University graduate ae from Cairo. “It should be a calm time. Whendoing your search, put . quotation marks around the whole name,so the search engine will look : for that combination of words. If you have a name in commonwith acelebrity like my husbanddoes, you may need to enter the name in quotation marksthen add a plus sign and birthdateora place, like this: “John Smith” +1938,or “John Smith” +1938 +Los Angeles. If you have a name like my maiden name which is also a y used word, you need to be creative in | your searches. If I were to enter just my maiden name,Free, | would have about a billion hits. Hereis whatI foundafter searching underall variations of , my name, e-mail and Web addresses, using both Google and Alta Vista search engines: * Under my childhood nickname, there were 373hits, but none were me.So I added my maiden name, Free. Nohits. Under Helen Free there were 194 hits, but they were primarily about an award-winning scientist. So | added my birth year andstill came up with 10 results, but rione were me. I added my middleinitial and then mymiddle name with noresults. WhenI used the simplest form of my name, LaRae Kerr, I had three hits, all mine. Two were GenForum queries, the third lists me as a CNHP (Certified Natural Health Professional). That was encouraging, so I added an F. No hits. But when I changed the F toFree, nine hits came up: two for my entry in the Genealogical Speakers Guild, another two for myentries on Geniespeak — Genealogy Speakers Bureau. The next entry was under the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. Why would I be there? Because I recently gavea lecture for that group at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. It turned out I am part of source number20 of a genealogy paper which was accessed from the classes | gave on the Web. How in the world did | get on Vermont interactive maps? Ah,it’s a link back to Genealogical Speakers Guild. Man,this is.interesting. Well, that was fun and maybe a little embarrassing. | tried some other combinations of my name.
