Show PAGE EIGHT' PROVO (UTAH)- DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 1943 Pre-Pearl Harbor Fathers to Lose Draft Deferment WASHINGTON, April 2 (UP) War Manpower Commission and selective service officials admitted today that the time is fast approaching ap-proaching when the ban on the drafting pre-Pearl Harbor fathers will be lifted. Maj. Gr n. Lewis B. Hershey told an informal press conference yesterday yes-terday that the "drafing of fathers fath-ers is approaching much more rapidly than you would desire" and that through "sentiment" he is putting it off as long as possible; pos-sible; In preparation for this, selective selec-tive service officials are preparing to erase the dependency classifications classifi-cations and put married men in class 1-A if they have no occupational occupa-tional claim to deferment, and in classes 2-A (necessary in their civilian job), 2-AB (necessary in a war job), and 2-C (necessary in agriculture). The reclassification of fathers probably would be delayed until the ban against their induction is lifted. U. S. Raids Japs on 15th Straight Day By DON CASWELL I'mtnl Press Staff Correspondent , i GEN MAC ARTHUR'S HEADQUARTERS, HEAD-QUARTERS, Australia, April 2 U.R) A communique today reported report-ed an air raid for the 15th straight day on Japanese positions along the New Quinea coastline above Buna. Numerous fires were started and the U. S. pianos saw no Japanese fliers. The communique . told of an air fight over Dutch New Guinea three days -ago in winch a Liberator downed one of two Japanese fighters which challenged it. A compilation of MacArthurs March communiques showed a list of 263 enemy planes and 35 ships destroyed or probably destroyed for the month, at a cost of only one bomber and eight fighters. These figures included the Bismarck sea battle in which the Japanese lost 22 ships, including three cruisers, but did not include in-clude an indefinite number of planes wrecked in the March 24 ' raid on Rabaul, where fliers caught 250 Japanese planes on the ground.
