Show THINK IT OVER The people of St. Ceorgo and the western part of the county should give the proposed mail schedule, change deep consideration considera-tion before they allow It go into :tU;cL. Tho question seems to be would the speeding up of the mail to the eastern end of the county, to tho park areas, and communities along highway 89, Justify tho sacrifices- which must bo made by slowing up the service ser-vice to Salt Lake and other northern points, the destination of a largo part of our mall? There are only two schedules possible. The one now in effect and the one which has been worked out by the chamber of commcrco committee. The latter calls for tho mail leaving here at 9 a. m., requiring posting by 8:30, and the incoming mail arriving ar-riving about 3:30 p. m. and distributed by 5 p. m. This lat- tr.. olinlnlo wna Tinf. fnrmnlnt- ed with the Idea of forcing it upon the people, but if possible to secure better service, and the matter will be left up to the business interests of the town, that they may take their choice. According to counts made at the local post office, one piece of mail goes to the area east of 91, including eastern Washington Washing-ton county, the parks, and towns along S9, to fifty pieces of mall destined to points north including in-cluding Salt Lake. However, this probably would be increased if the service were speeded up. Under ordinary conditions, with the present schedule, a reply to a letter written in Salt Lake may be received from St. George within 3 9 hours. Under the present schedule drawn up the chamber of commerce committee, com-mittee, the best time that could be made by the same letter and a reply received would be 5 6 hours. Would the one day saved on the round trip between St. George and eastern county towns justify jus-tify the loss of time incurred by mall to Salt Lake, in view of the fact that the great majority of the mail posted here is destined des-tined for that city? The post office department is ready to make the change if the people want it, but the question should he given serious thought before a decision is made. |
