Show NEWS NOTES FROM OVER THE LA SAL FOREST contributed by forest service according to the bureau of agricultural economics farm wages on october 1 were at the lowest level since january 1923 this was influenced in part to poor crop prospects farm products price decline and the fact that the supply of farm hands is more than 40 per cent in excess of the demand the bureau says that the excessive supply of farm hands is a reflection of the continuance of the present extensive business depression which has scattered unemployed industrial du workers throughout agricultural sections in search for work office visitors G M dangler formerly of durango colorado and now a resident of la sal paid the office a visit during the first of the week mr dangler recently purchased the hessong sawmill which he has been operating on pine ridge for the past several years he has secured a small amount of national forest timber under emergency sales and has made application for all the timber on pine ridge supervisor polster and ranger wagstaff are at work at the present time estimating the amount of timber on this area it will later be advertised for sale W L young of BI anding called at the office monday he was en route home after delivering a bunch of cows and weaner steers to ed lavendar of colorado considerable contrast in prices were received over last years prices he sold for 27 50 and cows for 30 the same class of stock brought him 45 and 46 respectively last year J A was also an office visitor the first part of the week he also delivered a bunch of cattle to mr lavendar he sold cows for 30 long yearling steers for 35 and two and three year old steers for 45 these prices are considerably less than he obtained last year H J holyoak and sons sold their weaner steers and heifer calves receiving 27 for heffers heifers and 30 for steers they were offered ac per pound but preferred the flat rate as above quoted winter range reports from various parts of the winter range in grand and san juan counties are not very gratifying the storms during july and august were in nowise general since large areas received practically no ram dry valley evidently received considerably more storm than other sections and as a result there is a sheep to every square rod of land A few stockmen stoc kmen in san juan anticipate wintering their cattle across the acan juan river a condition that has not been necessary for several years large quantities of oil cake and corn are being purchased and wherever stored feeds are available stock will be fed regional office visitor E C sanford assistant in the branch of forest management in the regional foresters office at ogden Is expected to arrive in moab saturday november 15 the purpose of his visit Is to make a study of the mistletoe infected areas in our timber stands inspect timber sale areas and get a general idea of the timber on the la sal forest |
