Show t I J VOL. iVt NO. 2. SPANISH PORK, UTAH, THURSDAY, JANUARY . STRIKE m IsjtPREADING. ow Following In Mo Workmen of . Petersburg of Footstep Bret iron. The most start s feature In the Russian strike sit utton Is the news fhat several factor a In Moscow have closed and that tl c workmen In the old capital of Russia are repenting the tactics of theirtfellow workmen of the new capital, ma thing from shop to shop and mill to m demanding that the establishments to shut down. The whole city is report ed to be In a state of great excltemen over the news ot the bloodshed at St Petersburg, which has precipitated Immediately the strike that had beji scheduled for - it ; ! Wednesday. Moscow has more rorkmen and less troops than St. Pt ersburg, and besides Is just now trap heart of the Lib- eral movement, ana the danger ot bloodier occurrence there than have been witnessed in St Petersburg are proportionately greier. A rising at Moscow Is also mdi9 likely to have greater results Indijsrlally and politl-callthan that of St Petersburg. According to pritrte reports the workmen in several other big cites,' notably Kharkoff. wjere large locomotive works are locded, already have completed plans fori general suspension of work. Morfetver, reports are current that the worimen, who otherwise would soon be forced back Into the shops or starve! lave received assurances of financial tupport from the sources which hithep have furnished the sinews of war ti the liberal and revolutionary agltatjcn, but have not before been In toucl with the labor movement. If the str.ke becomes general all over Russia and especially If the railroads are dnwn in, It might immediately force the nation to make peace iith Japan. 1 The situation appews grave every standpoint, bi$ the authorities, although apparently 'lomewhat bewildered, declare their utpose to stand firm, maintaining that it is their first y fr f-- duty to preserve A order, scouting pe idea of actual revolution. There are extremelj significant reports that Emperor Nicholas in making the decision at tls extraordinary meeting of the council of the empire to declare St. Petersat Tsarskoe-Selburg in a state of siege, announced that he had resolved to Issue a manifesto to the people, with a view of calming them, promMrig to create a mixed commission of workmen and officials to investigate and decide the 'questions of the demands of the strikers, especially the one affecting hours of labor, which Russian law fixes at eleven. The military In St. Petersburg on Monday had a firm grip on the situation, and the police used every precaution, such as forbidding the use of petroleum and requiring the people to remain indoors. The tension, which was somewhat relaxed in the morning, continued to Increase during the day. Conditions appeared to be ominous, when, shortly after dark, the workmen in two electric lighL plants walked out, refusing triple pay to remain, and plunging half the city Into utter darkness, including the Nevsky prospect, which is In the fashionable residence quarter. The water supply, also, was cut off, and a veritable panic ensued. Tales that dynamite was in the possession of the strikers and that it was the purpose to sack and burn the town had been 'n circulation, and many Reserve persons were terror-stricketroops were called cut to guard the darkened portion of the city. The peo-pi- e still In the streets, except a few strikers and roughs, fled to thcli homes. The editors of four newspapers, the Russ, the Viedomostl, the Novostl and the Gra8hdhnnln, declare their intention, as soon at the printers return to work, and they are able to resume publication, openly to defy the censorship In the matter of news and strike Sundays affairs. They drew up a letter to the censor, saying they felt the gravity of the situation demanded that they print the facts without minimizing or glossing them over. The Novoe Vremya and other papers, however, refuse to Join, and the letter was not sent, but the editors of the four papers named agreed to adopt the course indicated. o r WORK OF A FIENU Woman Badly Injured by Black Bruts at Reno, Nevada. An attempt was made to lynch a negro about noon Friday, at Reno, Nevada, because he was suspected ot having tried to kill Mrs. James E. Harper, a prominent woman ot Reno, who is so badly Injured she cannot recover. The assault upon Mrs. Harper was made In the morning, while Mrs. Har-pe- r was away from home. The negro fentered the house, and with an ax Btruck the woman as she lay In the bed with her two children. He then dragged her body into a woodshed and was preparing to sever her head from the body when he was frightened away by the children rushing to the house of a neighbor for assistance, When help arrived the man was gone. About noon a strange negro was arrested by a citizen, and the sight ot the man taking his prisoner to the county jail at the point of a shotgun caused the speedy formation of a mob of a thousand people. A rope was pecured, but a cordon of policemen surrounded the negro and fought through the crowd to the Jail. Court was going on in the courthouse, but it was quickly adjourned and Judge Curler addressed the excited mob, counseling peace. The mob was finally disbanded without accomplishing their purpose. Mrs. Harper is still alive. Her skull is fearfully crushed where she was struck by the ax and she Is lying iq an unconscious condition. v IN TERROR OF MASSACRE. Moslems Slaughter 5,000 Armenians) Including 2,771 Children. The state department has made public portions of an Important report recently made by Thomas H. Norton, American consul at Harput, Turkey, on the results of a tour of Investigation made by him, under Instructions from the department, through the vilayets of Bitlis and Van, which were the scenes during several months last summer of repeated attacks upon and massacres of Armenian Christians by the Kurds and other elements of the These disturbMoslem population. ances, attended by frightful atrocities and savage cruelty, resulted In death, suffering and destitution. The principal object of the visit was for the better protection of American interests there, and the timely arrival of Dr. Norton, it Is said, contributed to a peaceful termination. No Americans were known to have been in- jured. Dr. Norton says Mush virtually is an armed camp, which Armenians are in constant terror. He estimates In the Sassun district 5,000 lives were lost in last summers massacres, Including 2,771 children. YELLOW FEVER SCARE. Few Cases on Isthmus May Cause Exodue of Canal Builders. Unofficial advices received in Washington from representatives of the government In the Panama canal zone, dated at the end of the first week In January, are to the effect that while the current reports of the prevalence of yellow fever on the Isthmus are exaggerated, the pest docs exist there and some aprehension is expressed that if It continues to spread there will be a wholesale exodus of tbe canal builders. The cases so far developed are said to have probably been preventable had proper precautions been adopted. But the large influx of people of the north, unacquainted with tropical climatic danger, and the best means to avoid them, undoubtedly has afforded great opportunity for the spread ot yellow fever. The American woman particularly are said to be careless, and they don tbe lightest white mus-li- n shirtwaist In the evening and are almost surely bitten by the pois- onous fever-bearin- mosquito. to Death.
