Show A BAD BOY lie escapes from the reform officers in harry merrill a seventeen year old inmate of the beform school had a vacation for a day or two but he is now occupying a position of confinement where he will have time for reflection upon the folly of attempting to make himself hard to catch the boys were in the pardon on mon day afternoon industriously pursuing their hoes and rakes when harry noticing officer taylors attention diverted away from himself started on a run northward an alarm was given and pursuit was made the runaway eluded liis pursuers hy hiding in the brush the search was kept up nearly all that night and renewed on tuesday superintendent barton Us son charles and officer taylor were diligent but it was not till afternoon aft ernon that they got on the young fellows trail their inquiries of the residents along the road to willard met with little encouragement coura gement there appeared to bo a disposition to sympathize with the boy especially was this the case avith mothers who had seen hibrand same of whom had helped him in his endeavor to escape they had evidently got a wrong impression of the reform school and thought the boy ought to be aided to pet away young merrill had said to the people he talked with that he was well treated at the institution but that he wante d to go to liia home in logan finally a man was found who assisted the searchers and the boy wa sighted jiust north of hot charles bantou was right on to him but the young fugitive escaped him and i jumped into the river the water was so swift that he could not swim with any skill but the current tossed and tumbled him about until be reached the other bank officer taylor pursued him into the river and caught him he was brought back and is now quite sorry that he made the break it was a miracle thai both the boy and the man were not drowned in speaking of alie action of the people who refused to aid the officers in capturing the boy superintendent barton baid should be condemned for the reason that it is not only their light but their duty to give such aid an escape from the institution will do much to interfere with the discipline now in force there the inmates are well treated and they make no complaint except that theare tired of confinement they have violated the laws and are merely serving a term of training which will benefit them to aid them in escaping is really doing them an injury and tending to the of ficera in their efforts to do their duty to the territory ogden standard |
