Fueling minds continued from Page 3 depending on the number of faculty each department has and which software programs they use — contribute to funding the agreement. "The reason why we became involved is really the cost issue," said Lisa Kuhn, director of finance for Utah Information Technology. "It's the cheapest way to get Microsoft products on campus. It's not unusual. A lot of institutions do the same thing." Kuhn said although it is difficult to determine exactly how much the U saves through this agreement, they estimate it saves $125,000 a year. The University Information Technology department reported as of Tuesday, there have been 13,630 student downloads and 2,298 staff and faculty downloads. Kuhn said these downloads equal a value of more than $1 million. "A lot of the money we save is in cost avoidance for the students," Kuhn said. Students are allowed to keep the software after they graduate and use it for any personal use. Restrictions for faculty are more strict, depending on the program they choose and the software downloaded, but are generally limited to business and academic use. Some students, such as Noelle Pray, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, have run into roadblocks with the software. Pry said when she went to download Windows 8 she was asked to uninstall her antivirus software. "I waited at least four hours for Windows 8 to install," Pray said. "When it finished it asked me to uninstall my antivirus software so it could complete the transition from Windows 7 to Windows 8. I'm sure there is a way around that but I didn't have time and decided not to bother." However, Kuhn and Hacker encouraged students who face issues to contact the office's help desk or to go online for help. peak twitter twidiot • naltweetedt W naltweeted reed more tweets: twid iot I I 0 t twithot twidiot 'ear on the tweetttrgg eed more tweets?t w tWalkermaltweetE • n c• mkttit -_.i tw leed ore t t ea w , - ets?fuu •, lothertwuckerL " 1 , •• I :wertleman t er a • • n r- t e el fr i et • v • gr • le In w -- -Itwitter e twidiot • II eted 2e d ■ • m t mottwidio i • t malt et k itt Ispeak twitt th harderspeak twine weet a little leed more tweets? lothertw cker twittertwee ;weet le actwTEIL91 w idio tw idio etirti rd o trit l peak twitter naltweeted weet a litt leed more twee lothertwuc peak twitter Ker R1 Ljckr narae ee t :wittertw h w e?rtWittg4 idiot .re ed naltweeted naltweeted lat ets?tweetwa I kerma :wee lemaniacm mhertw ot weet KIMBERLY ROACH/The Daily Utah Chronicle Henry Sokolski speaks at the Hinckley Institute of Politics on Tuesday during the "Serious Rules for Nuclear Power without Proliferation" lecture.
