Utah's prehistoric past subject of institute The Utah Endowment for the Hu- manities (UEH) has awarded a grant to the Utah Museum of Natural History and the Bureau of Land Management to conduct a teacher institute about Utah's prehistoric past. The grant will help fund 80 teachers and social studies directors to day participate in a three and one-hatraining course at the University of Utah this coming June. Classroom sessions will then be followed up with instructional field trips throughout the state. Participants will be instructed in the use of a new curriculum for the lf 4th through 9th grades entitled "Intrigue of the Past: Investigating Archaeology." Teachers will get hands-o- n experi" ence with building a table-to- p chaeological dig, laboratory analysis, making stone tools and pollery, and teaching about Utah's rich archaeological heritage. They will also learn how American Indians view the past and archaeology. The goal of the Institute is to enable teachers to educate Utahs youth about our unique and valuable archaeological sites, a heritage that is vulnerable to vandalism and destruction. Following class work at the University of Utah, Institute participants will team with a local archaeologist to conduct a workshop for their peers in their home districts. Teacher graduates of the Institute program credits. receive five Third party cash donations are being sought to fully fund the Teacher Institute. UEH will match 50 cents to each contributed dollar. The National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Suite of Utah are also helping to sponsor the Institute.
