Show FOREST SERVICE TO REDUCE OVERHEAD i expenditures E 0 the following announcement is made by forest supervisor L D heywood concerning changes j in n I 1 forestry forc stry service ser vicc I 1 the manpower shortage as a result cf f total war is daily becoming 1 more serious this together 1 with transportation and commini com muni cation facilities and with other im management practices has made it desirable at this time to 9 give i V e s serious e r i 0 u s cons consideration Aeration to changes which will reduce overhead and supervision cos s and result in more eff chent and wise use of manpower and funds so badly needed on the war front and on cn the home front the forest service in line with i its desire to do everything J ble which will contribute to the war effort reduce expenditures for overhead and in an effort to put into practice suggestions of the bureau of the budget hascon has considered it advisable to combine tha uintah and the la sal national forest units under this arrangement an assistant forester would occupy the buildings s at moab an assistant forester would also occupy the baker ranger station these A assistant foresters would have the authority to do almost everything a forest supervisor can do the forest supervisor Super visar of the uintah and his assistant would assume the additional work with only slight additional office help he or his assistant would make occasional trips to the la sal unit for the purpose of giving attention to resource management and other problems and to confer with wilh the assistant foresters and with the people of san juan and grand counties it would seldom if ever be necessary for users to make trips north to attend tu to forest service business forest resource management can and will be handled locally as in the past it will continue to be the policy of the forest service to decentralize authority just as far as that is possible and to call upon the local people and the users for ad vice in the handling of the forest resources the excellent assistance the people of grand and san juan counties have given and are giving to the forest service and the warm spirit of co operation cooperation which exists between them will be continued the change will result in a saving of manpower and funds without in any way neglecting the many and valuable resources with in the la sal national forest with a larger unit and with reduced supervision clerical and overhead costs we should be able to get more money into the actual management protection and de of the forset resources |
