Hanksville resident was exposed to hanThe in late April, newspaper reports say, soon after he went tavirus camping near Dirty Devil River, adjacent to the Wayne County and Garfield Count)' lines. Hie area is in Southeastern Utah between Capitol Reef and Canyonlands National Parks. State and community health departments are determining whether the man contracted the disease from the camping trip or from working outside, near his home. The possibility of contracting hantavirus, however small, is still a threat due to erratic weather conditions. In 1998, wet weather caused abundant foliage during the El Nino season, providing food for New Mexico rodents. This resulted in the largest rodent population since 1993 and a hantavirus outbreak that killed Hantavirus threat affected by weather 7f 8. Transmission Some rodents are infected with a type of hantavirus that causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). These rodents shed the virus in their urine, droppings and saliva. The virus is mainly transmitted to people when they breathe in air contaminated with the virus. This happens when fresh rodent urine, droppings or nesting materials are stirred up. When tiny droplets containing the virus get into the air, the process is known as "aerosolization." Other ways rodents may spread hantavirus are: Bite. If a rodent with the virus bites a human, the virus may be but this is very rare. spread Touch. Researchers believe humans may contract the virus if few-case- Presently, there is ho specific treatment for the hantavirus infection. However, we do know that if the infected individuals are recognized early and are taken to an intensive care unit, some patients may do better. In intensive care, patients are intubated and given oxygen therapy to help them through the period of severe respiratory distress. The earlier the patient is brought in to intensive care, the better. If a patient is experiencing full distress, it is less likely the treatment will be effective. d. 1 r. .... If rodents don't find friendly conditions nesting material then people are less likely to come into contact with them. Research shows that many people who have become ill with HPS got the disease after having been in frequent contact with rodents or their droppings around a home or a workplace. In addition, many people who become ill reported that they hadn't seen rodents d or their droppings at all. Clean areas, using safety precautions. Food. Researchers also suspect that food contaminated with d rodent urine, droppings or saliva can spread the disease if eaten. Researchers don't believe that the hantaviruses causing HPS are transmitted by any other types of animals besides rodents. Dogs and cats don't carry the virus, but they may bring infected rodents into contact with people if they catch infected rodents and carry them home. Guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and other such pets don't carry hantavirus. d, virus-infecte- rodent-infeste- Symptoms Symptoms usually begin one to three weeks after exposure to infected deer mice. HPS is characterized by fever, chills and muscle aches, followed by the abrupt onset of respiratory distress and shortness of breath. The muscle aches are severe, involving the thighs, hips, back and sometimes the shoulder. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. i -- 451-329- 'H"UV"V 7 KAY AND M M4 protected polymer cabinet g Exclusive water rSSSs-- 4 Locations in distribution S i Clearfield & Layton Scaled bearings for longer II, c 800 to 22,000 Sq FtMany Sizes High performancelow maintenance Available Immediately!
