H clark of richfield R A lowe of monroe and C B greenwood of central representing the people of of the county of sevier and officials of the utah idaho Sug arCo composed of J R winder W S mccornick mck john C cutler executive committee C W nibley H G whitney T R cutler george austin and parley austin also being present 1 this meeting had been appointed to hear the committee from sevier in refe reference tence to the desire on their part to know if the utah idaho sugar co guild vu ild at ore or in tile the near fumare erect a I 1 factory in the county of sevier providing the people in said county N would guarantee that the would w raise beets enough to support such a factory their ide of the question was opened up by W 11 dark clark who represented a condition of the beet growers in the said county for the past two years year and particularly ticul arly during the season just pal passed s informing the utah idaho sugar co that because of their remoteness from the usual markets the price of their produce such as grain beets hay bay etc did not bung bling them nearly as remunerative prices is as that of beets and the people of the county flored the raising of beets in cent quantity to encourage the building of d I 1 beet factory the conditions during the past season had been ex e crucia ting in that it had been impossible to get cars to load beets in there had been sometimes all the teams in the different towns loaded with beets waiting for cars and in some instances had remained that way w ay for two tuo or three days they further requested that during the interim between now and the time that the factory should be bui built it they might have in certain places such as richfield the privilege of loading their beets in bins close to ane railroad track as is s done is some other localities they further stated that it was their desire that when a factory was built that they should be joined by the utah idaho sugar co in so building that factory they realized that their interests were in the utah idaho sugar co and they had no desire whatever to place their interests in any other companas comp anys hands A splendid representation was made by mr clark and his associates socia tes which fully covered all the ground many questions were put to them by the committee which were all answered ansai red intelligently and to the point after which individuals representing the utah idaho sugar co made rei remarks narks of an encouraging nature stating thit that they had bad fully realized and sympathized with the conditions that have existed in sevier county but it had bad been impossible on their part to obviate everything had been done that could ioos possibly sibly have been in urging the rio grande officials to give bettar service that they realized also that the rio grande had been in a condition that it had seemed utterly impossible to give the service required at the time it was needed and officials of the said company had lately stated to mr cutler and the general manager that they be livvel and they had bad good reasons to make the statement that conditions would be cry much changed the coming seaton is they had made arrangements for additional rolling took stock but the salt said officials had bad in made 1 do the remark that busin business cs hid iacre increased 1 S d so rapidly that they hid been totally unprepared to take care cae of it general manager cutler in ide some remarks to tile effect that amongst other matters that had been discussed there was at least one important proposition r that had never been mentioned first thit that there is under con at the present time the question of the revision of the tariff that fiat he had lately appealed before the ways and ale moms ins committee in washington and that he felt suie that some revision ifould be made on the schedule either on the general schedule ok or on the admitting free of dy duty a certion amount per annum of sugars which should thib ind and the amount was as i placed large 1 irge enough might seriously I 1 hamper in ili time both the beet and tine cine industry of the united though lie he considered consider pd that the more immedi lite danged was the pos sivility sibl lity of I 1 further le of the duty on oil cuban and ali tha 1 it he dundei stands it is the intention in or of president dent taft to call a spec so sc sion of congress in ili march and id bry this measure through thi ough and while he be did not apprehend himself any ins un im mediate danger it precluded the pos po sivility sibl lity of the building of more factor iab at present that no one would care to invest their money ili an industry that is subject to fluctuations such as aa outlined by some at least of the extremists tre mists ts on the tariff question but that he further bele ived that t ha t the question would be settled for many years to come at this special session of congress in march aforesaid he then offered a resolution tion which was voted upon affirmatively by the officials of the utah idaho sugar co that the matter of building a factory in sevier county be taken into consideration and also in connection with thai the matter of better transportation he stated that it was ivas his belief if those two matters could be disposed of and the people of sem sener ier and san pete counties would encourage the building of the factory by the raising of nuan ltv of beets that there was no doubt to his h is mind that I 1 in ili the very near future ind and possibly I 1 I 1 within t three I 1 cars a factory or far factories t could be built and capit il found for that purpose I 1 the question of assisting the farm ers of sevier county to bertei care of their beets and unload them was I 1 10 c bened to the manager and his a alt ait lt ants to discuss with the committee the result of that discussion will be faither elaborated upon in a letter to that effect the utah idaho officials expressed themselves very strongly as ab desiring to do all in their power to assist the people of sanpete and sevier on thes questions thy they also expressed express cd their sympathy for the arduous labors thu that
